The drug "Indomethacin" (ointment) in modern medicine is widely used and is considered an effective anti-inflammatory drug of nonsteroid origin. The medication is for external use only.

The drug "Indomethacin" (ointment): composition and properties

Ointment is a dense homogeneous mass of yellowish or yellow-brown color. The main active ingredient is indomethacin. In addition to the drug include lanolin, stearic alcohol, petrolatum, cholesterol and wax.

Indomethacin is a substance (an indole derivative) that is capable of inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins. It is this that can explain the anti-inflammatory effect of the drug. In addition, the ointment partially anesthetizes and lowers the heat. With chronic pain in the joints, this medicine relieves soreness when moving and at rest, and also eliminates the morning stiffness of joints, increases the amplitude of movements.

This drug is prescribed for diseases of the joints and periarticular tissues, which are accompanied by inflammation and severe pain syndrome. It:

  • Acute arthritis of different origin, gout;
  • Various kinds of spondylitis and spondyloarthritis, including Becherov's disease;
  • Acute arthrosis;
  • Myositis, bursitis and other rheumatic diseases of soft tissues;
  • The drug is used to relieve inflammation and swelling after trauma or surgery;
  • rheumatism.

Ointment should be rubbed soft circular motions into the skin over those parts of the body where the pain is felt. The procedure should be repeated two or three times a day. But the exact dosage is important here. Adult patients are advised to use approximately 4-5 cm of ointment squeezed out of the tube. For children, the dose is less - about two centimeters.

If necessary, the doctor can increase or decrease the amount of ointment, regulate the mode of its use. In any case, it is not recommended to use more than 15 centimeters of ointment per day (for children the maximum dose is seven centimeters).

This drug has some limitations in use. For example, it is not prescribed to children under fourteen years of age, as well as to women during pregnancy and lactation.

Another important contraindication is increased individual sensitivity to indomethacin or acetylsalicylic acid, as well as an allergy to any auxiliary component.

The probability of occurrence of adverse reactions and their intensity largely depend on the individual characteristics of the organism and, in particular, on its propensity to allergic manifestations. Violations by the following systems and authorities were registered:

  • The digestive tract - as a rule, it is nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite. The formation of ulcers and internal bleeding are considered very rare phenomena;
  • Allergic reactions - the most often observed effects on the skin. It can be redness, itching, hives, rash, swelling. Sometimes there is an attack of bronchial asthma;
  • Nervous system - the patient can complain of headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, impaired concentration, general malaise, decreased visual acuity.
