David Packard for his legendary fifty-year career had a big impact not only on the development of the electronic industry. Introduction to Hewlett

David Packard was born in the city of Pueblo (USA) in 1912. The boy's father was a very famous lawyer. When it was time to get a higher education, David stopped the choice at Stanford University. The young man was very interested in electrical engineering. Therefore, he was among the first students of the course of Professor Frederick Terman. There Packard learned a lot about radio electronics. In this course, David met William Hewlett, who studied engineering. Young people decided that in the future they will open a joint business. After completing the training, they both remained working in the walls of the alma mater.

Foundation of the company

The thought of opening their own business did not go out of their heads. In 1939, Hewlett and Packard decided to implement it. With capital of $ 538, young people opened the firm Hewlett-Packard (HP). By name it is quite clear that it is composed of the names of the founders. The question of the order was decided by lot. The first office of HP was the garage in Palo Alto, which in the future will be a tourist attraction of California and a popular tourist destination. It was here that Hewlett came up with an audio frequency generator for testing audio systems. The first order David and William received from the studio of Walt Disney. The company purchased several such generators to improve the soundtrack of its animated picture "Fantasy".

New office

In 1951, Frederick Terman became vice-president of Stanford University. To improve the financial situation of the alma mater, the professor began to lease out long-term land plots owned by the institution. In one of them, the Hewlett-Packard Company was established in 1954. Hence the beginning of the Silinokova Valley, which in two decades will become the world center of electronics.

David and William from the very beginning of their activities decided not to work under the rule of "grabbed and ran away." Back in the 1940s, they focused on the formation of loyal highly qualified personnel. Also, entrepreneurs created an income distribution program among all employees of the company. It still operates and is called "The Way of Packard and Hewlett". At the core of the program is a whole scale of values that lead to the main principle of the company's development - a constant movement forward taking into account market transformations, as well as regular care for the quality of life of its employees.

The first computer

In 1957, David Packard and William Hewlett organized a public distribution of shares of his company. But most of them were held in order that in the future, employees of the company could buy securities at a discount. In 1959, HP entered the European market. And in 1966 the engineers of Hewlett-Packard assembled the first computer. Its primary task was to analyze the results of the operation of electronic measuring instruments. In the future, HP computers often used innovative and bold engineering solutions. And if we consider technical characteristics, then they repeatedly exceeded the most widespread models of firms-competitors.

In 1968, the company began its activities in the Soviet Union. Since the end of 1990, the company's official representative offices have been operating in Novosibirsk, Moscow and St. Petersburg. In Russia, Hewlett-Packard is more popular as a manufacturer of peripheral devices: OfficeJet, scanners (ScanJet), Plotter (DesignJet), laser (LaserJet) and inkjet printers (DeskJet). ProCurve network equipment is also in demand.

Departure from business

David Packard became president of HP in 1947. And after seventeen years, he gave this position to William Hewlett, heading the board of directors. He held this post until 1993 with a break in 1969 - 1971, when he worked as Deputy Minister of Defense of the United States. After the hero of this article turned 65 years old, he retired. Nevertheless, he did not leave the post of chairman of the board of directors.

Death

David Packard, whose biography is presented above, died in 1996. The last way it was conducted by four children. Previously, the businessman announced his intention to transfer his shares to the charity fund, which he created with his wife in 1964. David owned 9.1% of HP securities worth $ 46.6 million.
