David Markovich Gotsman: prototype, photo, quote

An exciting investigation, conducted by David Markovich Gotsman - the head of the anti-banditry department, - Odessa's humor and inimitable talk have made the film "Liquidation" one of the most discussed and cited. The story was taken by the creators of real events, and the prototype of the protagonist was a real man. The picture tells about the struggle of the Odessa police with organized crime in the postwar period.

A Brief History of the Making of the Film

Particular interest of the people in the picture was caused by the fact that it was based on quite real events in Odessa after the war. In 1946, the city really experienced the peak of crime, and the law enforcement authorities fought against it as best they could. True, the film is saturated with a lot of unverified or deliberately invented information, which made it more fascinating, but less close to reality. Gozman David Markovich is also a fictional character, although he also has a real prototype.

The idea to create a film of similar content was borne by Oleg Kompasov, creative director of the studio "Father Frost", in 2004. Then, shooting in Odessa his next series, he drew attention to the fact how little the city has changed since the war. That's when the idea came to him to take down something about the hard times that came after the war.

On his return to Moscow, he took up reading the "Bandit Odessa", which described how Marshal Zhukov fought against banditry in South Palmyra. It was Zhukov's arrival in Odessa and the conduct of an operation to eliminate crime in the city and decided to beat him in the film.

David Gotsman: description of the character

In the film "Liquidation" David Markovich Gozman appears before us as a fearless fighter against crime. Throughout all 14 episodes, he confidently and purposefully fights the gangster factions of Odessa in general and tries to disclose a particularly large matter, gradually coming to the conclusion that the head of the criminal operation is working in law enforcement agencies of the city.

According to the plot of the movie, it becomes known that in the past, Gozman was a scout front-line soldier and a combat officer. Having received in a battle a serious wound, somewhere about a year in the hospital David Markovich Gozman conducts. Biography of him is silent about how he spent his years, this valiant fighter for justice before the war. Although in the future something becomes known to the viewer from the revelations of Davy Markovich before Nonna. But, as they say, what was, it was, but for now ... The elimination of all Odessa criminals - this is the only dream that has in the "Liquidation" David Markovich Gotsman. Icon Academician, who belongs to unknown employees of UGRO, to the great authority of the criminal world, causes concern for Gozman until he learns who is behind it.

The prototype of David Markovich Gozman

The creators of the film, apparently, did not want to just invent the plot and the characters - they wanted to create something more real that could really affect the viewer. Odessa is perfect for this: first, thanks to the really great rampant crime, and secondly, the external appearance of the city has changed little since that time. To draw the image of the protagonist carefully looking for a suitable Odessa police officer 40-ies.

And that man was found. Information about him was found in the Odessa Police Museum (it is a question of a personal diary). David Mendeleevich Kurlyand, deputy head of Odessa UGRO (who later changed his patronymic to Mikhailovich), born in 1913, is a decent man who loves his city and his work - that's what the authors of the picture believe is the best prototype of Gotsman David Markovich. His work in the police, he began in 1934, confidently moving up the career ladder. For active participation in the defense of the USSR Kurlyand received the Order of the Red Star.

Other prototypes

After careful research, some local historians came to the conclusion that David Markovich is a character with several prototypes. According to those who served at the time in the NKVD, David Markovich Gozman embodied the features inherent in Artem Kuzmenko, Viktor Pavlov, an operative named Frank, Yankel Fling.

All these people at different times fought against crime in Odessa. All of them are remembered as courageous and knowledgeable, how to behave with criminal faces, police officers. And all of them, in the opinion of some biographers, helped the director and script writer supplement the collecting image of Gozman, whose main prototype is usually considered Kurland.

Great game Mashkov

Classy David Markovich Gozman ... How to know, he would have been so gorgeous, if not for the marvelous play of the actor. According to many, this image is one of the best roles of Vladimir Mashkov. However, we can not say that it was given to him so simply - it was pretty sweaty. About a year, Vladimir Lvovich lived in Odessa, in order to plausibly embody the image of native Odessa. He tried to find out everything possible about the Odessa police and crime in the city. And even established contacts with local authorities of the retirement age. And for a detailed acquaintance with the prototype of his hero Mashkov studied all the materials about him.

By the way, Vladimir Mashkov was familiar with organized crime firsthand. His childhood he calls gangster, and youth is criminal. But if the gangster slang Vladimir studied with people from the criminal world, then to master the unique Odessa dialect, which became the main highlight of the picture, Mashkov, as well as other actors, had to deal with a linguist. As for external characteristics, it is interesting that Kurlyand David Mikhailovich shares similar features with Mashkov. Gotsman David Markovich (photo, which has reached us, it confirms) in the performance of Vladimir Lvovich, so it turned out well, just like the real Kurland.

His opinion about how successfully Mashkov managed to realize the altered image of David Mikhailovich, the relatives of the latter said. The grandson said that Gozman turned out to be strikingly similar to his grandfather. But the son's assessment was the opposite: according to him, the image of his father was greatly distorted. Although, most likely, the creators of the picture did not aspire to the goal of creating a complete copy of the Kurland.

Awards Mashkov for the role of Gozman

The role of an employee of the Odessa UGRO post-war years brought Vladimir Mashkov not only pleasure and material rewards, but also popular and official recognition. For the best male role, he received the national film award of Russia. "Golden Duke" he was awarded for his contribution to the cultural life of Odessa. No less an actor should be pleased with the awarding him the title of honorary citizen of Odessa, who was also awarded by Mikhail Zhvanetsky.

By the way, in 2010 Mashkov became a People's Artist of Russia, in his piggy bank about twenty awards. Vladimir often performs not only as an actor, but also as a director. His acting career began in 1984, and the peak of popularity came in 1994-1995. For participation in the film "The Thief", he was even nominated for an Oscar.

Ah, Odessa!

The inimitable talk and witty expressions, which are somewhat unusual for a Russian person, with which David Markovich Gotsman shines (the quotes from the film immediately left for the people), undoubtedly made the picture vivid and memorable. But, despite the fact that Mashkov studied the local dialect for the native speakers for a year, moreover, he worked hard with the linguist, some critics say that the speech of the main character, like all those who surround him in the script, passes false Odessa accent.

So, they pay attention to the wrong intonation of the actors, claiming that an absolutely new dialect was created on the set. In addition, the Odessa "sho" actors are constantly referred to as "sho". Critics have noticed many other linguistic discrepancies. Despite the fact that the speech of David Gozman probably differs from the adverb on which Kurland spoke, she incredibly liked the viewer and gave the picture an unforgettable color.

Brilliant phrases

The number of Odessa's humor and bites in the film, according to experts, is just off scale - the indigenous residents of the city do not say so. Apparently, the writers decided that no expression or joke, obtained during his stay in Odessa, should not be wasted. Immediately remember the viewer "oil painting", "cases for tonsils", "for tomorrow - tomorrow we'll talk" and "do not comb my nerves." True, many critics agree that not all expressions were at that time in everyday life among Odessa residents, and some did not exist at all.

For example, Gozman's phrase "gapped into the face" is devoid of reasonable meaning, since "gepnut" means to fall. And the expression Fima "throw their heads in the dung" of Odessa began to eat much later than the 40-ies. Instead of the Odessa word "hell" sounds "heat", instead of "bosyavka" - "bosota", instead of "shirmach" - "plucker". And the expression "Take the current take from Duke" should be changed to "Now I'll take the acceleration from the bridge to the slaughter". In a word, the film "Liquidation" is not quite suitable for judging by the speeches of its characters about the conversational speech of the people of Odessa. However, the pleasure of viewing it from this is not less.

Monument to David Gozman

In 2008, the opening of the monument to the Gozman was timed to coincide with the Day of Militia . Under the impression of "Liquidation", the order to install the monument was given by Yuriy Lutsenko. The monument was erected in the Jewish Street near the administrative building belonging to the Odessa Regional Police.

In the process of creating a monumental building, one unexpected and rather important question was born: what should it look like? It was discussed whether it is necessary to give the figure the features of Vladimir Mashkov's face or better to recreate the face of Kurland according to the surviving photographs.

As a result, the work of the sculptor does not have the features of any particular person. In the opinion of many, the monument looks quite interesting: a militiaman descends on the steps stepping out of the wall, holding the food on the open palm to which four pigeons have flown. Others are perplexed: where are the characteristic features on which you can learn Davout Markovich? If you do not know who the monument is dedicated to, the sculpture loved by many spectators of the chief of the Odessa UGRO does not remind at all.

In conclusion

David Markovich Gozman became a collective image, the prototype or prototypes of which were valiant police officers. Although not everything in this picture is plausible, one thing is certain: in the history of Odessa there were such courageous and conscious law enforcement officers. It remains to be hoped that the Jewish monument established on the street will always remind modern law enforcement officers of Odessa that the calm in the city largely depends on them.
