Create a tapestry with your own hands

Lint-free woven carpet on the wall was called "tapestry" by the name of the owner of the French painter Gilles Tapestry in the 16th century. These carpets, or, as they were called, trellises, were very widespread. The tapestry is a wall carpet depicting ornaments, paintings of nature, biblical subjects, people. They decorated the walls of palaces, castles, monasteries. Tapestry was a kind of indicator of the prosperity of noble or middle-class families. In addition, it was possible to determine the skill, diligence and artistic taste of the future bride, because the tapestries were created manually.

It is quite possible to weave tapestry with our own hands in our time. To do this, you do not need to have a huge loom. It is enough to use a wooden frame not larger than 100 * 100 cm. If you plan to create a trellis with a pattern, then a sheet of cardboard on which the contours of the image will be drawn. Threads for tapestry are used woolen, it is desirable that they coincide in thickness and composition of additives. On the wooden frame fixed warp threads, and then with working threads using knots and created a conceived product.

Tapestries handmade in the form of paintings hung on the wall, look great in the interior of residential buildings or offices. Those who love Russian history, you can use a different type of tapestry. These are Russian tapestries, which differed from European and Eastern themes by portraits of famous people, representatives of the state or nobility. In the Middle Ages, the tapestries of woolen threads not only adorned the castles and monasteries, but they also insulated the walls in the cold season. In the east, carpets were made of silk, they served as a sign of the wealth and power of the eastern lords.

And although it is not difficult to woven a tapestry with the help of a frame, many seem to be an impossible task. There are also simpler ways of making them. The easiest option is to embroider a picture or carpet with a tapestry seam. In some books it is also called a semi-cross. As a basis, a canvas or a dense stern cloth is best suited. As a working thread - silk, wool, wool, thin twist, floss. Threads are added in several additions so that the completed stitches completely overlap the base. A drawing applied to a tapestry is drawn by hand on sheets in a cage or bought ready-made in handicraft shops.

There is a more complex way that resembles a woven trellis. This is a technique of embroidering a loop. In order to make such a tapestry style with your own hands, you will need a special hollow needle with a handle. At its tip there is a hole for the thread. It in appearance resembles a medical needle for a dropper. A variety of fabrics are used for the basis of this tapestry, it all depends on what threads the work will be done. For example, for a large carpet on the wall is best suited thick fabric, resembling burlap. Threads in this case it is better to take woolen, half-woolen or acrylic. For small paintings on the wall you can use a dense linen cloth. Threads are better to use silk or special for embroidery. For one product you need to use the same in texture and composition materials, it will help to achieve the best appearance of tapestries.
