Conjugation of verbs in German in the present tense

We will not give countless tables in this article, no doubt, useful, but for the majority of students it is tiresome and gives the impression that the grammar of the German language is only "clever" for the teeth.

Therefore, here we will tell you about the points and the simple language, everything you need to know about the conjugation of German verbs.

Conjugation of verbs in German is accompanied by a change in the form of the verb by:

  1. Faces (I, you, you, we, he, she, she, they).
  2. Numbers (unit number, plural number).
  3. Times (present, past, future).

In the same way, verbs change in Russian, so this diversity should not surprise us. It is enough to get acquainted with what forms of conjugation German verbs give.

In order to conjugate, it is necessary to determine the initial form of the German verb:

If in Russian it ends in "-t" (do, cook, run), then in German, "-en".

Mach en - do,

Koch en - cooking,

Heß en - to name,

Lauf en - to run.

In order to form another form of the verb, you need to drop -en and add a new ending to the stem.

Mach-

Koch-

Heiß-

Lauf-

The first person is me and we

It's very simple: if you talk about yourself alone, add a concise ending "-e" to the basis, if you are not one, then the ending "-en".

I do - Ich mach e ,

We do - Wir mach en .

As we see, in the plural of the first person the form of the verb, in fact, does not change. It is the same as the initial one.

The second person is you and you

It is the second person we use if we address someone. Here everything is the other way around, for some reason the plural was awarded a simpler ending. And if you are addressing one person, then decorate the word with a flowery "-st". Compare:

You do - Du mach st ,

You do - Ihr mach t .

The third person - he, she, they

For the third person, the two endings are "-t" (singular), "-en" (plural).

He does - Er mach t ,

It does - Sie mach t ,

They do - Sie mach en .

As we see, here in the plural the form of the verb also does not differ from the initial.

Remembering all these endings is also difficult because they are repeating a friend. In fact, for the formation of 7 verb forms only four endings are used: "-e", "-en", "-st", "-t".

At this point many people have a logical question: is the basis of the word (mach-, koch-, heiß-, lauf-) in the conjugation of German verbs does not change in any way? After all, in the Russian language, the conjugation of verbs often involves a change in the basis (does it run, am I right)?

Conjugation of German verbs: subtlety

Indeed, in German there are special cases of changing the basis of the word. Pay attention to the verbs that end in a consonant, a duplicate ending. How, for example, to excuse the word biet en (suggest), because to add to the basis of biet the ending "-t" is hardly possible? How correctly to write "you offer"?

In these cases, the ending is diluted with the letter "-e".

Ihr biet t - no, so do not write.

Ihr biet et is the right option.

This rule applies to other words that with standard endings will sound inconsiderate, for example, begegn en (meet). Its basis ends with -n. Agree, to say -nt is not so simple. And in this example, before the complex -n there is one more consonant, so it's "-gn". Thus, without dilution, the sentence "You meet" would look like this:

Ihr bege gnt

Three consonants in a row - it's too hard to pronounce, besides the word is widespread and clearly deserves a simple utterance. Therefore, it will be correct:

Ihr begegn et

Irregular Verbs

Conjugation of verbs in the Russian language often occurs with the alternation of vowels (and consonants) in the root. For example, you can lie on the lag . In German there are also irregular verbs whose conjugation involves changing the vowel in the root, in addition to adding the ending.

These verbs are really more convenient to take in the tables - keep them close at hand. The fact is that irregular verbs are the most commonly used. Therefore, although it is necessary to know them by heart, it is not necessary to devote too much time to their cramming. More read, analyze, translate the original texts, referring to tables of irregular verbs. They will be repeated often enough so that you can learn them without difficulty, while mastering the structure, vocabulary and other aspects of the German language.

The most important irregular verbs are sein - to be, haben - to have, werden - to become. Their conjugation needs to be learned by heart, which also does not cause any special difficulties, because these verbs are used both as independent and as auxiliary (in various complex forms of verbs), and in any task in the German language are very often encountered.

After you thoroughly study the conjugation of verbs in the present tense and learn to use their different forms, the peculiarities of conjugation of German verbs in the past and future times will not seem complicated.
