California - the birthplace of beach sports

Versions about where the game with the ball started on the sand, the mass. However, they tend to California. And here in Europe this game was introduced by nudists from France. The officially recognized first match was held in 1927 in the State of California in State Beach under the auspices of Holzman.

1965 was marked by the creation of the first association, which came up with and approved the rules of the game of beach volleyball. Let and informal, but nevertheless the first competitions of a world scale have been spent in 76th year. And in July the 83rd founded the Association of Volleyball Professionals. In 1986, the World Volleyball Federation approved this sport game.

Let and as an indicative sport, but still playing with the ball in the sand in the 92-m entered the Olympic program. And already in 1997 the official world championship on a new kind of sports was held. The most successful in the beach game is the team from America and Brazil.

Classic and beach volleyball: similarities and differences

This sport arose as an active rest, based on the classic game of volleyball. However, over time, undergoing changes, the rules of competitions in beach volleyball have become significantly different. For players, such qualities as jumping, excellent reaction, feeding force and sense of play and ball remained important, but some other requirements were added. The game takes place on the sand, and this requires a certain level of physical fitness from the athletes. Like many sports, volleyball is held despite the weather, while the possibility of substitutions during the game is not provided for, respectively, the players require considerable endurance. And perhaps the most striking difference from classical volleyball is the right number of players. According to the rules of beach volleyball, there are only 2 players and therefore they must be universal.

Signals and gestures

Despite all the differences of this sport from other team games, it is distinguished by one interesting feature - signaling gestures. According to the unofficial rules of the game, the members of one team agree on the tactics for carrying out further actions on the playground. Such a signal is given by one player behind his back to another who is standing on the far side of the field. Each hand corresponds to a certain side of the attack. And the gestures themselves are:

  • 1 finger (strike blocking directed to the line);
  • 2 fingers (locking in the diagonal);
  • Fist (the player will not put the block);
  • Open palm (blocking the blow "into the ball").

There is also a "blinking" - alternately squeezing-unclenching the hand into a fist, which means the requirement to submit to the appropriate player.

Official rules

There is a whole volume of rules for playing on sand, created by the FIVB. Let's consider the most basic of them.

Following the rules of beach volleyball for professionals, each team has two players, and there are no substitutions. The site is on the sand, where the name came from. The size of the site for each team is 8 by 8 meters, and it is divided by a stretched mesh. The height of the net for men and for women is different (respectively, 2.43 and 2.24 meters). The main goal of the game is to strive for each team to ensure that the ball fell on the opponent's ground, while you need to watch that this does not happen to you. It is permitted to beat the ball not only with your hand.

The ball is allowed to be fed from behind the line of the court to its opposite side. The opposing team is allowed to touch the ball up to three times, and each player can hit the ball during the draw no more than once in a row. The exceptions are the first touch and the moment of the strike blocking.

The next submission is conducted by the team, which won in the draw when giving the ball, but already another player. To do this, it is necessary that the ball fell to the opposite area, went beyond the line or one of the teams made a mistake. The pair receives 1 point for each victory in the ball.

During the match, according to the rules of beach volleyball, two games are played, and in order to win, the team must win both. In the case of an equal account, a third additional party is held. Athletes must receive at least 21 points in order to earn the title of the winner, but the difference in the score should be more than 2 points. Otherwise, the game continues to the desired account. As for the additional game, it provides for the need to get 15 points under the same rules as during the main game.

It is worth noting that the rules of beach volleyball in 2014 have undergone some changes, which will be tested in July and August. Now the rule of three touch commands does not apply to touching the block. Therefore, in addition to touching the block, athletes have the right to 3 more touches before returning the ball to the opposite side.

Also exceptions were removed regarding the prolongation of the contact time of the fingers with the ball when the upper first contact was made, which included receiving the feed, contact after the blocks, and contact from the enemy's attack.

Prohibited receptions

Rules of the competition for beach volleyball also regulate the incorrect behavior of players during the competition. This can be unsporting behavior: intimidation, disputes, and the like; Rude behavior, for example, a contemptuous attitude; Insults, including gestures; Aggressive behavior and physical assault.

Between batches or even before the game, any misconduct also leads to punishment, which will be applied in the subsequent game.

It is interesting and fact

  1. In 1948 the official organizer of the tournament was the company Pepsi.
  2. In contrast to classical volleyball, according to the rules of beach volleyball, there are no temperature restrictions for games.
  3. The longest game and the match as a whole passed in 2005, then the additional game ended with a score of 33:35.
  4. Records on the speed of the ball: for men - 114 km per hour, for women - 86.5 km per hour.
