Cities and sights of Arkhangelsk region: Velsk, Mirny, Arkhangelsk

Velsk

The small town of Velsk on the banks of the Vagi River is known since 1780. There are several well-known names associated with its history: the geneticist G. D. Karpechenko, the writer I. N. Molchanov, the geographer NP Maltsev, the architect NN Pomerantsev and others.

Sights of Velsk Arkhangelsk region are, first of all, dozens of monuments of architecture. Here though there are no outstanding architectural masterpieces, but the historical building of the central part of the city is perfectly preserved. On the streets of Velsk you can see many beautiful wooden houses of the second half of the XIX century. Well, the most remarkable urban building made of wood can be considered the Assumption Cathedral, built in 1796.

In the center of Velsk, in a beautiful old brick-built mansion, there is a local history museum, which will also be interesting to visit tourists.

City Mirniy

Peaceful - a settlement with a special status of the "closed city", which was founded in the second half of the twentieth century. A few kilometers away from it is the Plesetsk cosmodrome. Therefore, all the sights of the Peaceful Arkhangelsk region are somehow connected with the process of space exploration.

In the city there is nothing remarkable. It is built up with typical panel houses of the Soviet period. There is a version that Mikhail Lomonosov walked on his way through this area on his way to Moscow.

The city is decorated with monuments dedicated to space launches of Soviet and Russian satellite devices.
