Genius

Symbol of the Kurgan region is the Russian Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopedics named after academician GA Ilizarov. Its history began in the forties, with the first ideas of the famous doctor, and began to be realized in 1966, when Gavriil Ilamarov became head of the laboratory in the Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, where he began to implement the proposed method in clinical practice.

But, probably, it is more correct to conduct the story from its origins, from a poor Jewish family in remote Belovezhye, in the territory of modern Belarus. The Civil War has just ended, with the return of the Red Army soldier Abram Elizarov, the father of a future celebrity. And in 1921, at the beginning of the summer, he was born, to the great joy of his parents and to the happiness of all people who injure limbs, a wonderful doctor, surgeon, inventor Gabriel Ilamarov. Born, graduated from the eight-year school, and then a medical worker. In 1939 he entered the medical school in Simferopol and in 1944 graduated from it. And a long journey began from the surgeon of the rural hospital to the director of the Center, who subsequently received his name.

New method

Many hundreds of fighters passed through the hands of the surgeon from wartime to the early fifties. Already in Kurgan, head of the surgical department of the hospital, where the invalids of the war tried to restore the health, Ilizarov observed the consequences of bone damage: existing methods of treating the results practically did not give. The surgeon with all his heart, with all his thoughts, sought a way out of this difficult situation.

Finally, Ilizarov proposed his own way of splicing the bones and the apparatus, confirmed by the author's certificate, for the implementation of this method. And the device did not fail! The effectiveness of treatment has increased unusually, the terms of fracture treatment have significantly decreased. Over time, with practical development, the use of Ilizarov's apparatus has significantly expanded.

Device

The Ilizarov Center still uses this transosseous compression distraction apparatus, invented in 1950, which not only fixes bony fragments stably, but also controls the biological processes of bone-clotted development, which are very complex. It's just, it would seem, rings of metal with attached knitting needles that pass through the bone, fixing a fracture. However, it is not easy. The rods connecting the rings have their own mechanics, which allows you to change the orientation of the rings in millimeters per day. That is, it is a dynamic universal design that allows the bones to fuse and simultaneously the musculoskeletal system to return functionality. For a wider application, Gabriel Abramovich unified all the details and units of the apparatus. Now the Ilizarov Center prepares each doctor to ensure that he can individually, for each individual case, mount from the same number of parts the necessary version of the apparatus. Before recognition, many, long and difficult years of work passed. Only in 1968, outstanding achievements were appreciated, and for the method of transosseous osteosynthesis, Ilizarov received a degree - without the title of candidate - a doctor of medical sciences. The thesis was defended in Perm, where a vast experience of curing thousands and thousands of people was presented and summarized. A comprehensive analysis made it possible to discover the patterns in the regeneration and growth of bone tissues, which made it possible not only to lengthen, but also to restore the lost parts of the limbs - the fingers of the hand and the foot. It was a sensation!

Also, the Ilizarov Center received the first results of its experiments on restoring the functions of the spinal cord after its almost complete operative intersection. Not only in the USSR, nowhere in the world then there have been conducted similar studies - neither in traumatology, nor in orthopedics. The novelty of the inventions that the Ilizarov Center researched was unique and unquestionable, therefore, our orthopedics and traumatology rightfully took the leading position and still retains it due to the fact that in 1987 the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR Kurgan Research Institute reorganized, creating in its place All-Union Kurgan Center Ilizarov with branches in Leningrad, Kazan, Volgograd, Ufa, Sverdlovsk, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Omsk, Vladivostok and in the Moscow region.

Leading foreign countries began to introduce Ilizarov's method into medical practice. The foreign press calls the academician no less than Michelangelo from orthopedics. The famous doctor receives invitations to France, Spain, the USA, England, Mexico, smiles and continues to work hard. Meanwhile, the Italian "Medical Plastic" bought a license to manufacture and sell a wonderful device to all countries of Western Europe, Brazil and Argentina. The Ilizarov Center still did not bear this name, but it has already gained worldwide fame.

Ibid, in Italy, the Association for the Study of the Ilizarov Method was established, and it decided to conduct permanent international courses on mastering this method. Ilizarov is chosen as the director of these courses, which are opened in Belgium, Spain, France, Portugal, Mexico, the USA and in a number of other countries. Ilizarov himself only visited more than thirty with lectures, conferences, training and operations. International relations are expanding and getting stronger all the time now. Awards

Ilizarov is a talented inventor, and very active. He has two hundred and eight patented and copyrighted inventions, of which only eighteen were patented abroad (in ten countries). A lot of VDNKh medals of the USSR gathered in his collection. And Academician Ilizarov was not only in the USSR, but also in the academies of sciences of Cuba, Macedonia. His work was very extensive: he was a deputy of various levels, he worked at four congresses of the CPSU. But never this kind of work did not overshadow the main one. Under the leadership of Ilizarov fifty-two candidate and seven doctoral dissertations were defended, he could be proud of his students.
