Celebrating Geologist Day

April marks the end of winter and the beginning of preparation for summer field expeditions, works. On the first Sunday of April we celebrate Geologist Day. It is celebrated by all those who seek and extract minerals: geologists, hydrogeologists, geophysicists, geochemists, explorers, miners, mine surveyors.

The holiday appeared not so long ago - in 1966. It was approved by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR for the merits of Soviet geologists in the field of studying and developing the mineral and raw materials base of our country.

The initiator of the appeal to the Council was a group of geologists under the leadership of Yanshin AL, and the reason was the discovery of oil and gas deposits in Western Siberia in 1966.

The day of the geologist is celebrated today not only in Russia, but also in the former Soviet Union countries. And, having marked it, geologists go on expeditions to far regions for the whole summer. They live in sparsely populated areas until late autumn.

Geology is the science of the structure, origin, composition of the Earth, its features and changes. Currently, it includes several disciplines:

• Geophysics;
• Geochemistry;
• Mineralogy;
• Stratigraphy;
• Tectonics;
• Petrography.

A geologist's profession is one of the most romantic. She studies the possibilities of the earth's interior. Geologists are in places where the human foot has not walked before. And then factories are being built on this site, cities are growing up. They pass hundreds and thousands of kilometers through the mountains, the taiga, the deserts, and the welfare of our country depends on their work (to some extent).

The day of the geologist needed to be celebrated earlier, because this profession is very ancient. It appeared in those times when primitive people began to make tools with the use of stones. The geologist is also an ecologist. He protects nature and all life.

This profession should be chosen for those people who love thrill. Extreme in excess: climbing mountains, diving on the seabed, heavy hikes with a burden on the shoulders. Sometimes there is no electricity and hot water, no delicacies and just delicious food. This work is for resolute, courageous and at the same time romantic natures. In extreme situations you have to rely on yourself and help a friend.

The geologist studies and compares rocks, selects samples for laboratory research. He must understand if there are minerals in the region , how they are located. He finds all the finds on a special map, makes a portrait of the terrain in the form of diagrams, diagrams, plans, evaluates the feasibility of development.

Geologists should have engineering thinking, know history, political science, sociology, culturology, mining and geological and geological disciplines.

The main qualities that a geologist need:

• Analytical mind;
• patience;
• observation;
• resourcefulness;
• ability to communicate;
• Unpretentiousness.

Geologist's day is celebrated widely and cheerfully. Even students are making noisy feasts. Often they go out into the countryside and cook shish kebab. It is on this day that initiation into geologists of first-year students takes place. They must overcome various obstacles on the street and in the room. So they train their physical endurance.
