Bolshaya Sukharevskaya Square and Malaya

If you carefully read the history of Sukharevskaya Square, it turns out that it originated in the late XVII - early XVIII centuries, and it gave the name Sukharev Tower. Here in those old days stood the archer's regiment of Colonel L. P. Sukharev. He guarded the Earth City, which was surrounded by part of Moscow. Before the tower stretched Sukharevskaya Square, which was arranged a lively market.

Noteworthy place

Sukharevskaya Tower was a high monumental building. Its top with the spire was seen from a long distance. It resembled the town halls in the western cities, which the king saw during his Great Embassy. There were even hours on her. In it, Peter I arranged a mathematical and navigational school. It was the first technical school in Russia that trained engineers. Here, they also equipped an observatory, and the people continued to live in the free space in front of it, calling it "Sukharevskaya Square".

Popular market

In 1780, the market was briskly trading various products, which brought the peasants. Later on it was possible to buy old things, very often - antiques, as well as shabby, sometimes very valuable manuscripts and books. This market was visited by Pierre Bezukhov, to buy a gun and shoot him from Napoleon. About one hundred and forty years ago it was often visited by lovers of antiquity. Sukharevskaya Square with its market was a popular place.

Moving to the first third of the twentieth century

By decision of the Moscow City Council, the market was closed first. Then they decided that the tower hindered the movement, and this beautiful and ancient structure, despite the protests, was demolished. Two squares were named Big and Small Collective Farms. There, of course, no one traded, but the name was fixed from 1936 to 1990. They were given a historical name, but left the old division into two squares and an old name, although they actually merged.

Big square

Sukharevskaya Square is one of the most remarkable landmarks. The photo shows the front entrance to the Institute of First Aid to them. Sklifosovsky. Before the revolution it was the Hospice house, or the Sheremetyevskaya hospital, designed for two hundred people. It is decorated with a double colonnade and a large dome. This majestic building in the style of classicism looks like a palace and was built in 1810. It is located in the depths of the courtyard and covers it in a semicircle. According to legend, Count Sheremetiev built it at the request of beloved actress Parasha Zhemchugova. The reproaches of conscience did not allow them to live, uninhabited, and they somehow tried to soften their sins by charity. They were married a year before Parasha's death. She died, according to some sources, from consumption, while others died in childbirth. In 1812, the French did not touch the magnificent building, but placed their wounded. He accepted the wounded Hospice house during the Russo-Turkish, Russian-Japanese and World War.

The Great Sukharevskaya Square is distinguished by another beautiful building. This is a former apartment house, which was built by the architect SK Rodionov for the trader Gutman. It is similar to the Russian mansions of the seventeenth century. Its roofs are four-sloped with a ridge, with a turret, on which there is a weathervane. The house is very attire, as it is decorated with white and bright green tiles.

Where are the squares

It is not very difficult to answer where the big Sukharevskaya Square is located. What area of Moscow is it? It organically blended into the Meshchansky and Krasnoselsky districts. The second, Small Square, is located only in the Meshchansky district. On it lived the singer and actor M. Bernes. On it there is an exit from m. "Sukharevskaya". These areas have a small paradox: a small area larger than a large one by twenty meters.

As we have already said, almost two areas have merged into one. When you quickly pass by, you no longer distinguish how one passes into another. Quite a different matter - a walk.
