"Ares of Ages": meaning, history, use and examples

"Arenove Veki" - what kind of phrase is this? This question is not so easy to answer, because phraseology in living speech is rare. However, we will try today to cope with the task.

The "eyelids" is an obsolete form of the "century"

The first association, when a person hears "eyelids" - is "eyes." But in this case, the true meaning of the expression "median eyelids" is in no way connected with the eyes. In those times, of which no one remembers, except books and historians, the plural of nouns had other endings. And now, when the modern reader sees "eyelids", there is confusion. However, it is easy to resolve.

It is known that some biblical heroes lived by today's standards (and by any calculations) indecently long. For example, Methuselah lived for 969 years, and Noah 950. The phraseology is not guided by them, but by Jared, who, in turn, lived 962 years.

But do not rely too much on numbers, because:

  1. Since the Bible is a source of the ancient, it could reach us with various distortions.
  2. Let's not forget that these are stories, but stories are usually embellished with reality.

Use

But, strictly speaking, the story of expression is necessary for a person only for general development (if he does not fall into the circle of burdensome philologist-tormentors). And to flash erudition, a person needs to know the meaning precisely, so when someone says "median eyelids", he means for many years. If they congratulate with the help of phraseology, they want to live a long life. Also the expression is used as a statement of the fact of longevity. For example: "He lived for ages".

One interesting detail: there is a version that the age of the biblical centenarians was considered not by years, but by months. If we accept this version, the life path of the ancient heroes, or rather its length, will no longer shake the imagination.

"Bicentennial Man" and phraseology

To make the material better absorbed, teachers are advised to bring bright, memorable examples. It seems that this is a good recommendation. Therefore, to illustrate the expression "medieval eyelids" (meaning is no longer a puzzle for the reader), the film "The Bicentennial Man" (1999) is suitable. Moreover, the problems of humanity, longevity and technology are interrelated in it. The film tells the story of a robot who, as a result of a software malfunction, wanted to become a human being. We will not spoil the impression of the film to future viewers, we will only say that it mentions the biblical long-liverer Methuselah, and the hero, too, has experienced many adventures during the time released to him on earth.
