Application of orange peels in horticulture

Many of us like fragrant and juicy oranges, but, having cleared them, we throw out the orange peel. However, it should be remembered that not only delicious pulp pleases our taste and helps maintain health. The rind of this fruit is no less useful. Areas of human activity where it is possible to use orange peels are very many. The most common is the peel of this citrus in cooking, winemaking and cosmetology. Many mistresses apply it not only for the preparation of delicious dishes, but also for the environmentally friendly cleaning of the house.

In this article we will not delve into the secrets of confectioners, cooks, winemakers and cosmetologists, but consider the use of orange crusts in the garden, in horticulture and floriculture.

Orange peel

We all heard about the vitamins and minerals contained in the orange, but few know that its skin (the outer colored layer) contains more vitamins than the flesh, and it also contains essential oils and pectin substances. All this contributes to the fact that the use of orange peels is becoming more popular. It should be noted that they can be used not only in fresh, but also in dried and crushed form. Maintaining your health with these orange fruits, during our long winter, you can stock yourself with dried orange peel to use it during the summer season.

We reserve for future use

It would seem that it could be easier - cleaned and ate an orange, dried its crusts. But it's not so simple. Modern fruits, including citrus fruits, are copiously treated with a variety of chemicals, both during cultivation, and during transportation and storage. Therefore, before you prepare and start the use of orange peels, you need to thoroughly wash this fruit, and then burn it with boiling water.

Only after this, you can remove the peel from the peel with a special knife or vegetable peeler. The removed "skin" is dried for two or three days at room temperature. Some housewives recommend drying the peel in the oven or using a vegetable drier, and then grind it. You can try this with an old coffee grinder or a mechanical grinder. The resulting mass is laid in a clean and dry container, preferably with a tightly fitting lid.

Saving indoor flowers

Plants grown in an apartment are prone to diseases and damage to pests. Quite often, flowers are simply destroyed by various mites and aphids. To save green "pets" will help fresh or pre-stored orange peel. The application for flowers is quite simple: 200 g of orange peel should be poured with a liter of water at room temperature. The container with a solution is removed for five days in a dark place. After this period the solution is filtered, and the crusts are squeezed. ½ cup of infusion is mixed with 2-2.5 liters of water and add about a teaspoon of "green" or simply soapy soap. Leaflets of plants can be washed or sprayed with the resulting solution on both sides. It is better to repeat this treatment in a week.

Furry "pests"

Many growers and gardeners are faced with the fact that cats and cats are very indifferent to young seedlings, and to room flowers, as they say, no-no, and "pull paws."

Therefore, the following application of orange crusts is advisable: lay them on a window sill next to flowers or seedlings. Cats close to them do not fit - orange smell they do not like very much and try to avoid places with such an "ambre." As experiments have shown, deodorants and air fresheners with the aroma of orange are much weaker.

Another problem is the discrepancy between the cat's and your idea of the place of the toilet. Therefore, you can mix fresh and finely chopped orange peel and coffee grounds, and then apply around the animal-loving place. The first time can not help, but after two or three applications your pet will stop going to this place.

Garden troubles

After saving home flowers and seedlings with the beginning of the summer season, we export to the garden the orange peel accumulated during the autumn-winter season. Application in gardening can be very diverse. First of all, infusion on the peel of oranges is used to combat such insect pests as spider mites, thrips and aphids. For its preparation, crusts from a pair of oranges must be crushed and poured with 1 liter of warm water.

Then the container with the substance for a week is put in a dark room. After seven days, add a little liquid soap to the resulting formulation and filter. Then, the affected plants are treated. It is worth remembering that against aphids and thrips treatment is carried out two to three times, and against spider mite - 5-6 times with an interval of a week.

We drive the ants

Quite a lot of trouble in the garden area is delivered to the colonies of ants, in the fight against which will help orange peel. Application in the country is quite simple: peel two or three oranges in a blender with a glass of warm water. The resulting mashed potatoes are applied to paths laid by ants in the beds. By dissolving the powdered powder in more water, the resulting composition can be poured into anthills. The only problem is that insects, most likely, will take their home to another place.

We protect the flower beds

Fighting insects, the use of orange peels in the garden and in the garden is not limited. Some flowers planted in a front garden or on a flowerbed, enjoy increased attention from the representatives of felines from all around. In order to save your landing from visits of uninvited guests, spread out the peel of oranges in flowers, especially loved by cats. You can rub the leaves of plants with fresh skin - then the cats will bypass the flower beds and flower beds with the side. The method is effective, only crusts will have to be changed after rains or watering. The product used at home, namely a mixture of crushed crusts and coffee grounds, will be able to help in this case.

Other features

At the beginning of the dacha season, when the house is still cold, orange peels will help to dissolve the fire in the stove. Application in gardening will occur a little later, but as a kind of kindling orange peel is simply irreplaceable. It burns longer and better than paper, thanks to the presence of essential oils.

In addition, the combustion produces a very pleasant smell, thanks to which in a still cold room it immediately becomes warmer and more comfortable. You can simply arrange the crusts of orange throughout the house - the musty smell will disappear, and this will be useful for the respiratory system, because the phytoncids released by zest are oppressed by various pathogens.

Orange peel is useful, and later, when mosquitoes and midges appear. If you do not have allergies to citrus fruits, then you can simply rub the open skin of the orange with open areas of the body - the smell remaining on your skin will scare away the insects.
