Aortocoronary Shunting in Israel

What is aortocoronary bypass surgery?

Aortocoronary shunting ( ASCh ), or bypass surgery, is an open procedure for heart surgery that involves redirecting blood flow to the heart surgically by attaching an additional blood vessel to bypass the blockage or extremely narrowed coronary arteries.

Description of the procedure

The operation is performed under general anesthesia. A breathing tube will be placed in your throat. Then cut through the skin. To open the chest, it must be divided. The device of artificial circulation will be connected, and since the heart should be stopped for the duration of the operation, this device will work for the heart and lungs.

From the chest wall, arteries will be taken, or, part of the vein will be removed from the leg, which will then be used as a bypass. As soon as the heart stops, new blood vessels will be connected to the blocked arteries. One end will be attached directly above the occlusion, the other end will be attached just below it. Once this is done, the heart will be allowed to "wake up". In some cases, the use of electric current may be necessary to regulate the heart rate. After that the device of artificial circulation will be disconnected. To help drain the fluid, temporary tubes can be placed in the chest. Then the thorax will be reunited, and the breast will be sewn with sutures.

There is a less invasive approach, called minimally invasive coronary artery surgery . The purpose of this operation is the same, but the technique of operation and the patient's condition are different. Candidates for this approach can be patients who have only one or two blocked arteries. In this technique, a small incision is made in the chest. The doctor usually uses the arteries inside the chest for bypass. The main difference in this technique is that the doctor performs the operation while the heart beats. During the application of this technique, an artificial circulation device is not required.

Indications for surgery without an apparatus of artificial circulation:

  • Severe calcification of the aorta;
  • Stenosis of the carotid arteries;
  • Patients with an increased risk of stroke;
  • Poor functioning of the lungs or kidneys.

Aortocoronary shunting is performed if:

  • The patient has severe atrial dysfunction;
  • After a heart attack, mechanical complications were formed, for example, mitral valve insufficiency or poor condition of the atrial walls;
  • An unforeseen resuscitation of the heart was performed;
  • The patient had a prolonged ventricular tachycardia, which was caused by a significant coronary artery disease.

If you need aortocoronary bypass surgery, the doctor will carefully examine you to determine the individual option that will be effective for you.

Aortocoronary shunting in Israel has an outstanding reputation, thanks to experienced Israeli cardiac surgeons, whose results have been recognized by the New York Department of Health as one of the best.

Israeli surgeons have special experience in re-conducting high risk operations, as well as in combined operations with a bypass valve and rehabilitation procedures.

Cardiological clinics in Israel provide:

• Experienced cardiosurgeons (two for each operation), doing well in highly specialized and serious practice in patient management;

• a model of medical care directed by a surgeon, carried out with the help of experienced practicing nurses and medical assistants;

• Supportive and experienced intensive care;

• arterial bypass with high survival rates.
