"Ode": history

The car Izh "Oda" 4x4 was the last hatchback among the four mass models that were created in the last years of the USSR. The car has an unusual story. Whereas at most automobile factories (and this is VAZ, AZLK, ZAZ) tried to get away from the archaic rear drive to the front, Izhmash went back the way.

Initially, the experimental hatchback Izh-13 "Start" was created at the plant. It was in the mid 70's. In the Ministry of Transport, the car was rated with a cold. Perhaps the front drive was then considered not so promising, or certain people in the ministry simply lobbied AvtoVAZ, so that no one could take the front-wheel drive from the Volzhsky plant.

The front wheel drive is not a panacea

Anyway, the designers of the plant began to work out anew and managed to discover an interesting thing - in the few years that have passed since the launch of the Start, the automotive world has already overestimated all the advantages that the front-wheel drive has. It turned out that the smaller mass, economy and controllability are not as great as they thought. Most innovations in general were in no way related to the front drive type. This body type hatchback, suspension makpherson, steering mechanism with a rod. Engineers "Izhmash" saw a huge number of advantages of the rear drive. This made it possible to use the nodes and parts used in previous models, as well as the calculated strength calculations, to create a replacement for Izh-2715, one of the most popular models of auto.

The first prototype

The prototype, which was born in the year 79 differed rear-wheel drive, galvanized body type hatchback, steering system with a rack, a five-speed gearbox, a two-circuit braking system. Also, engineers were able to find a good layout - the engine and gearbox were shifted to the right. This allowed to make room and remove the pedal unit in one level with the motor. Due to this, the engine compartment turned out to be very short. So, with its dimensions Izh had a very spacious interior - from the pedals to the backs of the rear seats the distance was the same as that of the "Volga".

Recommended for production

Five years after minor improvements, Izh-2126 was approved for production. Initially, the model was given the temporary name "Orbit". But later it was renamed "Ode".

The advantage of this machine was in the great unification of units and aggregates with other major producers of the USSR. So, the car was unified with VAZ-2106, AZLK-2141, M-412 and other models. This approach allowed "Izhmash" to significantly save on development, as well as improve maintainability. The external appearance of the Ode was badly damaged by the front optics from the VAZ-2108. The issue was very sluggish, as the launch of production took place during the years of perestroika and the post-perestroika period. By the year 95, they collected only five thousand cars. Specialists of the plant themselves knew that the quality was not too high, even though most of the assembly equipment was purchased in Japan, as well as in other developed countries.

When the production was established, it turned out that there were a lot of fans for this car with the rear drive, and the assembly was more stable. Having created the basic version, the factory decided to implement all the features of the rear drive. So the pickup was born on the basis of "Ode" - "Version".

Oda: four-wheel drive and other modifications

And finally, the car Izh "Oda" 4x4 was further manufactured - it is a crossover, which is a descendant of the "Muscovites" and "Victories" with all-wheel drive.

The transmission system was installed from the "Niva". In this version, the noise insulation of the cabin was significantly improved. On the basis of the "Ode", several more cars were later created. So, the latest mass car is the Izh "Oda Fabula" 4x4 wagon with rear and four-wheel drive. Another luxury version of the popular hatchback "Nika" was also produced. The release of "Ode" was set up in small volumes, finding the demand of ordinary people who prefer to repair the car with their own hands. The car was able to compete with the classic models of the VAZ. People bought cars Izh "Ode" 4x4. Reviews about them then were only positive - this is still no one did in Russia.

End of model release

In 2005, Russia switched to environmental standards "Euro 2", and for the production of "Ode" would have to change the engine from the carburetor to the injector. The management of the plant decided that this move will affect the cost of the car and lead to a decline in sales. Therefore, in 2005 the model was removed from production.

This is a serious advantage for the car Izh "Ode" 4x4. The feedback of the owners confirms this completely. The only negative, according to the owners, is a large fuel consumption, especially in winter. But this can be reconciled - such abilities have only expensive all-wheel-drive jeeps.
