When charging, the battery is boiling - is it normal or not? Find out why when charging the battery, the electrolyte boils

Many car owners were faced with the fact that when charging the battery is boiling. Someone does not bother, some, on the contrary, turn off the charger (charger). There are several actual ways of how you can restore the battery's energy to 100%. In this case, the bubbles may be either absent or present. Let's figure out how to charge the battery, and whether this phenomenon should manifest itself.

Boiling of electrolyte: ok or not?

So, after you connect the memory to the battery terminals, you notice that several or all of the banks containing the liquid start to behave unstably. This is quite normal, but there are some nuances. If you just connected the battery and found the boiling of several cans, then such a device can be discarded. This phenomenon suggests that there are closed plates and it is unlikely to be of any use to such a battery.

If you notice that when charging the battery is boiling, then do not be afraid - this is normal. In fact, it's not boiling. The formation of bubbles in the banks indicates that the explosive gas is released, in other words, electrolysis occurs. In this state, the electrolyte has a normal temperature and does not rise to the maximum maximum (above 45 degrees Celsius). Let's see why bubbles appear.

Why is the battery boiling?

As a rule, gas begins to stand out when the battery is already fully charged, and now you will understand why. Since we have a limited capacity, we can not accumulate an infinite amount of electrical energy stored in a chemical form. Consequently, when the battery is fully charged, all incoming energy is converted to a gas.

You should understand that under no circumstances is it recommended to perform charging of an unattended battery with a clogged gas outlet pipe. It is due to the fact that the battery is boiling, and the energy can not go away, since the lid is closed. More than once there were cases when banks AKB simply ripped. Nevertheless, you can still recharge, but you need to try not to charge the battery more than 80-90% of the maximum. Now you know that the process of bubbles appearance is quite normal. As soon as they start to form, you need to disconnect the charger, after which you can install the battery in place.

Preliminary work before charging

Before starting the process, you need to remove the battery and put it on a horizontal surface. It is advisable that everything be done in a ventilated room, since a poisonous gas is released, besides an explosive gas. Then you need to unscrew all the banks (this applies to the serviced batteries). You can do this with a large flat screwdriver, sometimes even with your hands. We should see the electrolyte: if its level is lower than usual, then we add water (discile). Once you have fully set the normal level, you can connect the charger.

The main thing here is not to mix up. We connect the plus of the memory to the positive terminal, and the minus - respectively. The charger has two wires: red and black, "+" and "-". The battery is charging, we are watching. If the battery capacity is 60 Ah, and the current is 6 amps, then 10 hours is enough to fully charge the device. But please note that if the battery is boiling while charging, and it started at the very beginning, then this is a clear signal that you need to reduce the current. This way you can avoid spoilage. Nevertheless, you need to understand that the battery should be boiling during charging, but not too intensively.

A little bit about the correct charging

Modern batteries mean the use of a current equal to 1/10 of the total volume. So, a battery of 12V 60 Ah needs to be charged with a current of no more than 6 amperes. But this method is not always used. For example, the exception is the complete discharge of the battery. In this case, you need to use a lower voltage, about 2 amps. Occasionally, the forced charging method is used. It should be noted that this has a very negative effect on the device, since we use a current equal to 60-70% of the total capacity. If the battery is 60 Ah, then we charge about 40-45 amps. The high probability that the temperature of the electrolyte will rise to 45 degrees Celsius, in this case, the process must be stopped.

There is also an equalizing method. In some cases, it is most preferable, since it allows the active mass of the battery to be completely restored. The current strength in this case is 0.1 amps. Therefore, charging this way will take a very long time, but this will not affect the functionality of the device.

A few important points

Not everyone knows that after the battery starts to boil, it can be recharged for a while. As practice shows, on average, this is 2-3 hours. After that, the battery can be considered completely ready for operation. If, however, when charging the battery, the electrolyte boils for a longer time, this will lead to oversaturation and further destruction of the device. Also, you can check the density of the electrolyte, if it is in the range 1.28 then the battery is charged, if lower, then still not.

Do not forget that when the bubbles are bubbling for a long time, the electrolyte will gradually boil away, so it is advisable to disconnect the battery from the charger in time. It is also strongly advised not to place the battery near open sources of fire for obvious reasons. It is desirable that the charge is carried out indoors, so that the battery does not get rain or dirt. Also I would like to say that it is not necessary to place the battery on unstable surfaces, especially when the recharge process is in progress.

Conclusion

After reading this article, you should get a general idea of why bubbles appear. As already noted above, this is quite normal, but the process needs to be controlled and not allowed to recharge. The process of electrolysis of electrolyte water is observed during DC charging. If you use the equalizing method, then the appearance of bubbles may not be. As for the forced method, then, on the contrary, boiling can be too intense. In conclusion, I would like to say that you need to comply with all the requirements and rules described in this article, and then everything will be in order. If the battery is boiling during charging, this is a signal to the fact that the battery is almost charged and it can not be left in this condition for the night, as this can lead to negative consequences.
