What is the feast of November 1? Life of the Righteous John
What is the feast of November 1? St. John the Righteous, the Kronstadt Wonderworker, was born on October 19 (November 1 in a new style) in 1829 in the far north in the village of Sura in the Arkhangelsk province, in the family of poor deacon Ilya Sergiev.
Education
The newborn was weak in health and often ill, so his parents hurried to baptize him. What a feast? On November 1, according to the new style, John was born, he was named after a saint, whose memory was celebrated by the holy church that day, the Monk John of Rylsk. Soon after the sacrament of baptism, the child became better. Pious parents attributed the healing to the graceful action of the holy church and began with particular inspiration to guide the child's thoughts and feelings towards God. Mother Theodore accustomed to diligent church and home prayer, and the father took with him to worship, nurturing a special love for them.
What a feast? November 1 was born and stayed in extreme material need of John, he learned early the dreary pictures of poverty, suffering and tears. All this left an imprint on his heart and nurtured compassionate love for the poor, so he showed deep sympathy and grew concentrated, reserved, thoughtful. He did not have a propensity for the games inherent in children, but carried in his heart thoughts about God, even when he admired nature, because it also reminds of the greatness of the Creator.
Study
What is the feast of November 1st? On this day, the sixth anniversary of the future miracle-worker John was accomplished, and his father began to teach him to read and write. But the doctrine was badly given to the boy, which made him very sad, but at the same time inspired hot prayers for help. When he was nine, his father collected the last of the money and sent him to the Arkhangelsk Parish School.
There he acutely felt his helplessness and loneliness, finding solace in prayer alone. He often and fervently prayed, asking God for reason. And suddenly, at night it seemed to him like a shroud fell from his eyes, he remembered the details of the lesson of the previous day. From that moment his memory improved, and he began to understand everything.
The church holiday on November 1 is for all Orthodox Christians. This day was given to us by a priest, whose sermons were distinguished by the simplicity of presentation and the power of persuasion. John graduated with honors from the Arkhangelsk seminary and even enrolled for a public account in the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.
Prophetic dream
The metropolitan life did not go to harm John, he remained the same as at home, focused and serious. When his father died, the young man obtained his place in the office, where he received scanty money, which he sent back to his mother.
John wanted to devote his life to missionary activity, to bear the word of God to the savages of North America and Siberia. But it pleased God to see him in a somewhat different pastoral work.
Once, after returning from a walk home, he fell asleep, and he dreamed a dream in which he saw himself as a priest of the Kronstadt St. Andrew's Cathedral. John took this as a command from above. Soon the prophetic dream came true. After graduating from the academy, John was offered to marry the daughter of K. Nesvitsky, who served as archpriest of the Kronstadt Andreevsky church and to be a priest of this cathedral. He accepted the offer, remembering his dream.
November 1 is a holiday in Russia. This date is marked by the birth of a man whose kind and unselfish deeds glorified him to the whole world. At the end of 1855 he was ordained a priest, and since then his whole life has been connected with this cathedral, why even many called John of Kronstadt, forgetting his surname "Sergiev", and he himself often subscribed.
Brother and sister
For the Orthodox Church, it is necessary that the priest serving in the world be married, so John concluded it. In fact, their marriage with Elizabeth was fictitious, covering his selfless pastoral feats. The couple lived like a brother and sister. John said to his wife on the wedding night: "There are so many happy families, and we will serve God." Until the end of his days he remained a virgin.
Activities of John
Having become acquainted with his pastoral duties, he realized that there is nothing less to do for selfless service than in distant pagan lands. Kronstadt was the place where people with different vices were expelled. Here, heterodoxy, unbelief, sectarianism flourished. Laborers engaged in the port, huddled in pathetic dugouts and shacks, begging and drinking. Local residents had to suffer a lot from them. The streets of the city at night it was not safe to walk, the risk of becoming robbed was great.
It was with such people, morally dead, all despised, and a great shepherd began to work. Every day I went to their poor shacks to care for the sick, to help financially, to console, to talk. Often returned home naked and without boots, gave out everything he had. These "tramps" were the first to notice the holiness of John, for he, through the power of his compassionate love, restored to them the lost human form. Then the whole believing Russia recognized the priest, who has since celebrated on November 1 an Orthodox holiday.
This activity of the young shepherd evoked censures from all sides. Many mocked, some did not believe in sincerity, slandered, called the holy fool. Even the diocese did not give him a salary for a while and called for explanations. But no one and nothing managed to break it, trying to change his way of life - he courageously endured all the trials.
The church holiday on November 1 marks the whole of Orthodox Russia. People finally realized that before them a true follower of Christ. All that they laughed at and laughed at was lauded.
