What is the best way to make a hedge? Fast-growing hedge

In our region, not so often you can find a hedge, but in recent years, this method of gardening is beginning to be actively used by our summer residents. And in this there is absolutely nothing surprising. Live hedges not only play the role of traditional fence, but also extremely beautiful. Using thickets of bushes, you can create a great place to relax. That's just what it is better to make a hedge?

Kinds

First you need to understand what they are in general. Only then you can think about what shrubs are best used in your particular case. First, they are divided into those that are formed and freely growing (only rarely cut). Of course, the first category is most often found on household plots. An exception can be made if you need an original fence of pasture or garden.

In height, all hedges can be divided into the following varieties:

  • Tall, more than two meters.
  • Medium-sized, from 50 cm to a couple of meters.
  • Low, whose height does not exceed half a meter.

Other characteristics are closely related to the biological characteristics of the species that were used to create them:

  • Evergreen and deciduous.
  • With spines and without them.

Basic assortment

So what is the best way to make a hedge? Considering that in the same England similar plantations are already one of the sides of the national culture, for many centuries the main recommendations that all gardeners should know have been worked out.

We list the main species that can be used without any special restrictions in the climatic conditions of our country. We will not give a detailed biological characteristic, since for this purpose such data does not play an especial role. In general, based on the classification that we gave above, you can recommend a huge number of trees and shrub plants. Consider what it is better to make a hedgerow of a taller category.

Tall deciduous trees

  • Limes are small-leaved and large-leaved. In nature, these are trees, the height of which in certain cases can exceed the mark of 20 meters. They form a fairly dense and compact crown, perfectly tolerate long-term shading, and also very durable. This allows you to recommend them to create a kind of "living walls". However, their use is limited to those cases where you need a fast growing hedge with a height of more than three meters.
  • Hornbeam. Also excellent for creating high hedges, but in the southern regions. It is perfectly formed, it forms a dense crown, is resistant to shading. In the USSR for these purposes it was widely used in Ukraine. It should be noted that both species described above are in great need of loose and nutritious soil, do not tolerate salinization, low pH.

And from what it is better to make a hedge if you do not have these trees? Perfectly suitable mulberry, as well as ordinary maple. It is strongly advised not to confuse the latter species with the American maple, which by its "impellers" is able to turn hectares of land into thickets of its seedlings. If you need a prickly fence, you'll have to find an ordinary haw.

Gledicia vulgaris can be used (again, only for southern regions). Also suitable is barberry. A hedgerow from it will fill the air with a wonderful aroma of flowers, and also will give the owner fruits, from which you will get a delicious jam.

Coniferous plants

In the case when it is required to create evergreen plantations, we recommend that you pay attention to the common spruce. It perfectly tolerates the strongest winter frosts, it can grow in conditions of constant shading, but it must be planted on fertile moist soil.

Tees is also good, but suitable for western and southern regions. In addition, the planting material of this culture is difficult to obtain from us. Note that yew berries are poisonous, so if small children live in the house, it should not be planted. For normal growth, he needs quite fertile soils.

Finally, do not overlook the junipers. They grow for a long time, they require light and relatively dry soils. As a bonus - the ability to disinfect the air, which makes them invaluable to people with respiratory diseases.

Medium height hedges

In this case, the range of possible crops is extremely wide. In our region is not very familiar with the ordinary hawk, but this view is perfectly suitable for such purposes. She perfectly formed, and the bushes for a long time retain the desired shape. In addition, the beetle is very decorative.

Excellent proved himself as a hedgerow of a cotoneaster. It is very beautiful, it forms dense and thick thickets, it is not too demanding for the quality of the soil. Tavolga Vangutta is ideal for creating large and unsupported fences, as it needs a sunny open space. With its help it is possible to enclose even a large pasture, and the density of growth will be such that cattle through it will not get through. In addition, as a good breed for hedges, various types of spindle bones have proved themselves. They are low, have unusual leaves, beautifully bloom.

For aesthetic hedges, you can plant lilac, honeysuckle (delicious fruit), currant and tavolgu, as well as acacia, irgu and mountain ash. As for irgi (a beautiful fast-growing hedge), it will have to be thinned out constantly, getting rid of the young shoots growing in all directions. In addition, during the fruiting season, a large number of sparrows will gather on these trees, which is desirable not in all cases.

Prickly hedges

For these purposes, sharaklava pyracantha is widely used. It is not very common, since it is suitable only for southern regions. Forms very dense hedges, decorated with berries of orange-yellow color, which remain very long on the bush. A plant with a curious name, the narrow-leaved fox has proven itself in arid conditions, as it is practically insensitive to soil quality and irrigation.

Here you can include the same juniper and thuja, hawthorn and even the hornbeam mentioned by us. Of course, in this case it will be necessary to exert more force for his constant molding and cutting.

We make dwarf hedges

In another way they are also called curbs. The assortment of species in this case is not so wide, so there is not much to choose from.

Firstly, a boxwood can ever approach evergreen. Very shade-tolerant, extremely slow growing. In addition, in most of our regions in the cold winters has a tendency to freeze. Not bad itself has also been recommended by the mahogany deciduous. The hedge is made of it quite "loose", but it blooms beautifully, and its berries are very decorative. In addition, this shrub belongs to the category of shade-tolerant.

Tips for planting

It is extremely important to adhere to the terms of disembarkation into the open ground, and also to select the right soil and the types of fertilizers used. Than at an earlier age you plant a tree, the easier it will be in the future. Hardwood cultures best tolerate transplantation in 2-3 years, and conifers - a maximum of five years. The fact is that it is from this age that it is best to begin the molding of plants.

Secondly, be sure to mark out the landing site by pulling a string for this purpose. Do not engage in the planting "by eye", since you can hardly achieve a really direct landing, focusing solely on your eye. A beautiful hedge, the photo of which is in the article, is always distinguished by regular geometric shapes.

How to land?

Depending on the number of rows, we dig a trench of the required width. Note that between the plants should leave gaps of at least 60 centimeters (if the hedge is free - then from 1.5 meters), and between the rows should make breaks of 25-50 cm. If you sit in two or more rows, use the chess order.

Be sure to take care of the fertility and moisture of the soil. If there is such a need, it is desirable to make the necessary types of mineral and / or organic fertilizers, after which it is necessary to water the planting holes. If it is a question of deciduous species, then the root system of trees should be kept in water for a couple of hours before planting, and then dipped in liquid clay (creamy consistency), mixed with humus.

The very landing is also extremely desirable to do on the level. Near each plant plant, you must carefully compact the soil. Water each bush in two or three sets, so that water could absorb and reach the roots of plants. As for coniferous species, they should generally be planted together with that lump of land with which they were purchased. In this case, the hedge, the plants for which you sometimes have to buy, has a better chance of survival.

Pruning and shaping

After planting, the plant should never be pruned. This event is postponed for at least one year. An exception can serve some species of coniferous trees. In the following, the plants are cut at a time when their young shoots begin to slightly lignify. At each branch, you must leave at least two live kidneys.

As for the annual increase, in the first two or three seasons it is necessary to leave a minimum of 15-20 cm, subsequently reducing this value to a couple of centimeters. It is best to shorten the plants in early spring, and also three times throughout the summer. Attention! The last pruning should be performed at least one month before the onset of persistent colds.

Care

It should not be forgotten that a hedge is not supported by a single crop, the bushes decorate your site. She needs watering, weeding from weeds and fertilizing with fertilizers. As a rule, throughout the growing season you need to make 50-100 grams of fertilizer per meter. Top dressing is performed three times. At the beginning of summer nitrogenous fertilizers are used, turning to phosphorus fertilizers by fall.

In the early years, weed control is very laborious. At a distance of about 10-15 centimeters from the edge of the fence, all the weeds must be mowed out, as it takes away the necessary moisture and nutrients from the plants. Only in this way can the best hedge be obtained.
