What are demotivators: a challenge to the social foundations or black humor?

Walking along the expanses of the Internet, you certainly have repeatedly faced the incomprehensible word "demotivators." Where did this strange term come from, and what are demotivators?

These are pictures accompanied by a satirical, humorous inscription that is a kind of challenge and destruction of the living standards formed by upbringing, traditions and advertising. Demotivators act as the complete opposite of motivational posters and carry a comic, and sometimes cruel, meaning.

How did demotivators come about?

The very first demotivator was created by the Americans as a parody of motivational posters, widespread in the country with the goal of educating youth and influencing people. Motivational posters, despite the instructive information contained in them, were boring and uninteresting, causing people only dejection and indifference. But then, as always, amateurs joked, inventing a boring poster an excellent alternative - posters, compiled on the same principle, but differing in the emotions that they caused.

Depending on the pictures and slogans, demotivational posters caused spectators a range of sensations: sadness, a smile, laughter, despair. The idea was accepted by society, and the posters were widely disseminated. Funny demotivators used special favor of the people. The description of a seemingly innocuous image with a biting humorous inscription began to enjoy success and popularity.

The meaning of demotivational posters

At the moment, the Internet is full of pictures called demotivators. However, not all of them relate to the term we are considering. There are many posters, accompanied by obscene, insulting inscriptions and vulgar images.

Classical, true demotivators carry a deep meaning, a sad irony over an existing situation that can not be changed ... a bitter truth that everyone knows but does not want to acknowledge, and not the rude and obscene humor that today's world is already full of. And what is demotivators against the injustice of life? Just an irony, sarcasm, hiding deeper feelings.

Categories of demotivation posters

Demotivators are usually divided into several types:

  1. Funny - positive images with humorous inscriptions, designed to cause people to laugh and cheer up.
  2. Sad - reflecting light sadness, sadness and sadness.
  3. Internet demotivators. The purpose of such posters is mockery or praise of Internet memes.
  4. Socio-advertising posters that emphasize social problems of the population in order to attract attention, or ridicule them.
  5. Presentation - demonstrating what demotivators are, and advocating belonging to certain sectors of society and youth movements.
  6. Philosophical, bearing a deep, wise meaning. Such posters do not ridicule anyone and nothing, but try to convey truth to the people, they teach the good. Usually these are images with aphorisms and statements of famous people.
  7. Raw - created in a hurry or ineptly, not carrying any semantic load and not causing any emotion.

Motivators and demotivators

We are looking for the answer to another interesting question: "What are motivators and demotivators?" Motivators are posters propagating good, respect, joy of life, love and other values. They call for everything good, spread positive and positive emotions, motivate to do good deeds. Motivators are bright, funny images of happy people, animals, beautiful landscapes with an appropriate inscription - an appeal.

Their complete opposite is demotivators (the meaning of the word: "motivator" - inducing to action, "de" - prefix with the meaning of removing the attribute). Demotivational posters are pictures in a black frame, in the lower part of which are placed ironic or funny inscriptions. Unlike the bright sense of motivators, they carry a negative color: mockery, sarcasm, cruel irony, black humor. And, oddly enough, they are very popular.

So what are demotivators? A mockery of cruel reality or black humor? Pictures that do not carry a certain semantic load or images that have a profound meaning, pointing to a truth that no one sees or simply does not want to see? You decide. It's sad that classical demotivators are getting smaller and smaller, and they are replaced by banal or, worse, obscene posters, absolutely devoid of any meaning and logic.
