One of the oldest hunting dogs in the UK is the Welsh Springer Spaniel. With the participation of these animals, several other English breeds were bred. After reading this article, you will learn about the features of the exterior of such dogs.

History of the appearance of the breed

The English knew the ancestors of these dogs from ancient times. They were often used during hunting. Welsh Springer Spaniel, whose photo will be presented in this article, raised the game into the air, for which he was called a scarecrow. Due to the fact that the main breeders of these animals lived in Wales, it is considered their historic homeland. Dogs, endowed with excellent working qualities, quickly gained popularity among English hunters.

As for their origin, the dog handlers still do not have a single version. It is for certain only known that their closest relatives are the cocker spaniels. In an independent breed they were separated only in 1902. Their development was strongly influenced by the First World War, during which the population of these fine dogs was on the verge of complete extinction. Since 1923, by joint efforts of breeders and connoisseurs of these dogs, it has gradually been revived. It is interesting that in our country representatives of the Welsh Springer Spaniel breed are not present. Why is not officially registered in Russia, no animal remains a mystery.

Features of temperament

They are energetic and very devoted animals. Welsh Springer Spaniel is very friendly with respect to all members of the family of his owner. He loves children and is able to get on with other pets. Uninvited guests they meet rather wary, informing about their appearance with a loud barking bark.

They are easily trained, literally on the fly seizing commands. However, with improperly organized training welsh springer spaniel, puppies which resemble a plush toy, is capable of showing unprecedented obstinacy. Usually from them grow excellent companions and fearless defenders. Despite their small size, they bravely rush to help their master, if he is in danger.

Welsh Springer Spaniel: Breed description

They are compact, tightly built dogs with a slightly stretched body. They are ideal for intense long-term work. The height of adults varies within the limits of 44-48 centimeters with a mass not exceeding 20 kilograms.

The head of the animal is proportional to the total addition. On a straight, straight square muzzle, there is a dark or fleshy nose with well-developed nostrils. Welsh Springer Spaniel has low-set hanging ears, close to the cheekbones. They are covered with a rather thin coat and in form remotely resemble a grape leaf.

The length of a muscular body with curved ribs and deep chest is proportional to the height at the withers. The entire body of the dog is covered with beautiful silky hair of pure white or dark reddish red color. As for the drawing, everything here is very individual, because there is no clear standard in this matter.

Maintenance and care

These hardy hyperactive dogs need systematic training. They perfectly adapt to living on the street. But at their disposal must be a convenient warmed house. Welsh Springer Spaniels have a fairly long wool with feathers in the area of the rear surface of the paws. Therefore, animals must be combed regularly. To remove dead hairs, you can use a comb or brush. During moulting, you need to do this several times a week. Otherwise, all the wool will be on your carpets and furniture.

Another characteristic feature of these dogs is that they are prone to a set of excess weight. Therefore, owners should carefully monitor their diet.

What to feed such a dog?

The basis of the diet of a welsh springer spaniel should be a natural diet. Experienced cynologists do not recommend giving them dry food. It is desirable that in the daily dog menu there are low-fat raw beef, vegetables and sour-milk products. Cereal cultures can disrupt the intestinal microflora, so they should be excluded from the list of allowed ingredients. In vegetable dishes, you can add a little bran.

Several times a week the dog can be offered fish, which will be a good alternative to the meat component of the dog's diet. However, experts do not recommend fully translating welsh springer spaniel for seafood.

Features of training

These smart and enthusiastic dogs are easy to learn. Despite the fact that they quickly remember the team, they are very independent and stubborn temper. Therefore, with mismanagement, the process of learning the welsh can turn into a real test. They need a solid training, they need a real leader to educate them. Otherwise, the animal will cease to obey.

Before each training session, you need to stock up on enough of your dog's favorite treats. Do not forget to encourage her efforts and do not skimp on praise. Try to make your studies short and boring. Do not forget that representatives of this breed do not tolerate rough treatment, they can not raise their voice. To achieve the desired results, during the training you should show maximum perseverance and patience.
