Tumor of the ovary: classification, description and diagnosis

In the ovaries of women can develop a very large number of different tumors. Most often, the ovarian tumor is benign. Such neoplasms are delimited from surrounding tissues, they do not germinate in depth, nor are they capable of forming metastases (formation of a daughter tumor outside the affected organ). Benign tumors are very treatable. With the help of surgery, you can remove the ovary or part of it, and that will be enough. Another thing is an ovarian tumor, which is of a malignant nature. To treat such tumors, a very large volume of treatment is required, including both surgical methods and chemotherapy.

Classification of tumors

Any tumor carries its own specific name, which it receives, depending on the cells from which they germinate. In addition to cells, the character is also noted: benign or malignant tumors of the ovaries. There are three types of different tumors:

  • Epithelial, which originate from cells lining the outer wall of the ovary (epithelial tumors are most common);
  • Stromal - tumors arising from structural cells that are responsible for the secretion of female sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone);
  • Germinogenic - such tumors originate from embryonic (stem cells), from which all cells of the ovaries develop.

Epithelial tumors, for the most part, are benign. They are not able to metastasize and pose no particular threat to the life of a woman. There are several types of benign tumors, which include:

  • Mucinous cystadenoma;
  • Serous cystadenoma
  • And Brenner's tumors.

There are also such tumors that differ slightly from malignant neoplasms. Such cells are called borderline tumors and have a low potential for malignancy. From a typical cancer, such cells are distinguished by the fact that they do not germinate into the stromal structures of the organ. Often, such tumors are not life threatening, although in some cases they can cause death. There is an ovarian tumor that has a low malignant potential, mainly in young women.

Tumor of the ovary: symptoms

Diagnosis of ovarian tumors is complicated by the fact that the symptoms that arise during the development of the disease are very rarely taken seriously by women. Initially, benign and malignant tumors proceed without any visible changes. A little later, there are pulling pains in the lower abdomen, which are perceived by many women for inflammation of the ovaries and they, without turning to the gynecologist, begin to conduct self-treatment. Usually it only aggravates the state of things, because the tumor grows, and it is only harder to treat it. Still later there is a slight increase in the abdomen. In cases where a malignant tumor develops in the ovaries, those that are difficult to connect to the ovaries are added to the symptoms described above. These include: a feeling of general malaise, nausea, headache, loss of appetite and a sharp decrease in weight, loss of mood and a significant decline in performance.

Ovarian Tumor: Diagnosis and Treatment

The basis for the diagnosis of ovarian tumors is a regular visit to the gynecologist, as well as a detailed account of what changes in overall health have occurred recently. Do not hold back even the seemingly most minor symptoms, whether it's mild pain in the lower abdomen or a feeling of heaviness. Such approach will allow to reveal the tumor at early stages and treatment of even malignant neoplasms will become many times simpler, because curing first-degree cancer is ten times easier than the fourth.
