To inspire: is it good or bad? The meaning of this concept

Sometimes the word "inspire" occurs in speech. What is this term? Nuances will be explained in the article. Let us analyze its meaning on accessible examples.

"Inspiring" means "inciting"

Of course, the word in question belongs to the book vocabulary and is rarely found in everyday speech, or it slips in the midst of intellectuals who like to express themselves vividly.

The first meaning that dictionaries give: inspiration is the same as instigating. That is, with this word often there are negative associations. For example, inspire a riot against the government or the entire world order. But this, perhaps, is not a very understandable example, we will quote a case that is closer to everyone.

Schoolboy-rebel and broken lesson

Everyone who has studied at school is familiar with the situation when the class is not ready for the lesson. And especially the talkative student is asked to distract the teacher before the end of the lesson. As a rule, such a trick is a success. Maybe the nonconformist schoolchild is not familiar with the meaning of the word "inspire" (this is what the term is and how to interpret it, we have mentioned it in part), but it successfully applies this concept.

The second meaning of the word "inspire"

The concept is also associated with violent psychological actions in relation to reality. Inspiration in this case is the same as inspiration. If the first value is negative in its emotional color, then the second can not be said. Of course, it's bad for someone to inspire a certain way of thinking or acting. But people living in the community, one way or another affect one another.

For example, VI Lenin inspired the Russian revolution. And it's still unclear: is it bad what happened or is it good? Reality is generally ambivalent, that is, both good and bad at the same time. What to give preference, the person decides. Much depends on the point of view on certain things. Thus, it turns out that the above word meaning is neutral.

Inspired: what does this mean?

Based on the meaning of the word, it is not so difficult to establish the meaning of the passive participle "inspired." Its meaning is easily deciphered. Inspired - this is a fact or an action that was caused by someone's interference (direct or indirect), incitement, suggestion. It is important to note that there is not a single word about the natural course of events, when people communicate and, accordingly, somehow mutually influence each other. This concept is based on the other - there is a manipulator man and that person who is subjected to pressure and a tendency to a certain action or inference.

Positive value

Contrary to the dictionaries, sometimes people use the notion of "inspirational" (the meaning of the word in the positive sense will be discussed later) as a synonym for the lexeme "inspire". Thus, they make a direct translation from English, for to inspire means to "inspire". But according to Russian dictionaries, this is not exactly the correct use of a non-Slavic word. Of course, the language is plastic and will endure much. Over time, some words have changed their emotional poles, turning from positive to negative and vice versa. For example, the word "witch" changed the plus to minus. Previously, it meant a woman who was a sorceress who understood herbs and plants and treated in accordance with nature, and now the witch is a lady who flies to the coven and kisses the devil's hoof. Previously, people respected the lead, and now they are afraid, because it has become synonymous with darkness and evil.

Based on this well-known example, we can say: the word "inspire" does not necessarily bear a negative characteristic. It is important to understand what exactly the speaker means. Perhaps he knows English, German or Latin and literally translates this concept.

Difficulties of usage

Apparently, the word "inspire" is very insidious, so you have to be careful with it. By emotional coloring, it can express both negative and positive or neutral meanings. How to be? It is very simple: you must use only those words in the speech, in the meaning of which the person is sure. For example, if you ask the question "what does it mean to inspire?", Then, referring to the Russian language, we can definitely say that the word carries a negative rather than a positive meaning. To inspire is to inspire or incite.

True, in one case, the degree of violence against reality or a person is slightly less than in the other. But the difference is small, and the main meaning remains the same.

It's time to formulate the result. What is inspiration? The definition of the word is divided into three options:

  • Inspiring is the same as instigating, that is, having a psychological effect on a person in order to obtain a concrete result.
  • To inspire is to inspire something to a person or a group of people.
  • To inspire someone to do something.

True, sometimes people use a word in the general sense of motivation or motivation for anything. In other words, the word "inspirational" is not easy to use, and in handling it you need certain knowledge.
