The trilogy is what?

The trilogy is the ideal form of a literary work (in the opinion of book lovers, these "bookworms"). During its reading, you can catch and get used to the characters, and add their own opinion about them, and imbued with the plot; And at the same time, the atmosphere does not get bored, character characters will not fade, and intrigue does not seem "drawn by the ears."

Many trilogies have become fond of readers and have become a national treasure, while others have completely outgrown the epic, and even into a whole legendarium. It seems that now this form is gaining popularity (or did it not lose its prevalence?), After all, more than one literary work is being released just in this form. Over the past few years, not one or two book trilogies have come out, and in various genres - from youth anti-utopia to erotic novels that have become best-sellers.

Terminology

A trilogy is three pieces with one author. They are also united by a plan, and their plot is distinguished by continuity. What is the etymology of the term "trilogy"? It is translated from Greek simply: treis - "three" and logos - "speak", "word", and means a series of three interrelated tragedies.

By the way, an important nuance. Although there is usually a trilogy in literature, it's not just novels and novels. No wonder the definition says "author." And under it can mean a writer, a musician, and a film director.

Other values

Three-part speech is also called a trilogy. In addition, as already mentioned, in Ancient Greece the term denoted three plays (tragedies) of one author, which were shown sequentially. Sometimes they were accompanied by a satirical part, and then the totality of the works was called tetralogy.

Later, the initial requirements were softened, and the meaning of the word "trilogy" acquired the current meaning, without rigid limits and limitations.

"Oresteia" of Aeschylus

From the above, we can draw the following conclusion. Trilogy in literature is a work that can relate to any genre. But the Ancient Greek term is still better to be considered on the basis of "native" literature, and nothing is suitable for this role more than "Oresteia" Aeschylus. This tragedy is the only one that has reached the present days entirely. It is distinguished by a complicated structure, but this only proves the genius of the ancient Greek word masters. The tragedy "Oresteia" tells of the descendants of Atreus. The crime committed by their ancestor left them a grievous legacy - a real curse that overshadows their fates.

Aeschylus is considered to be the invariable "father of tragedy": he founded the principles of this genre and, like no one else, managed to use them in his greatest work.

Lyrical cyclization

The lyrical trilogy is an artistic unity created by A. Blok. During his life the poet released several works in this form. In total, Blok has four lyrical cycles. This collection of poems, which were conceived by the author as a whole, although the elements of the trilogy, in fact, can act as independent works. The complex cyclic system used by the classic is a special type of text-making. The researchers labeled it as "lyrical cyclization."

"The Three Musketeers" by A. Dumas

The famous trilogy of an equally famous author about the three musketeers has its own characteristics and features. First of all, it should be said that the "Three Musketeers" themselves, and the sequels Twenty Years Later and The Viscount de Bragelonne, or Ten Days Later, are adventure novels. The works depart from the ancient definition of the term we are considering, forming a new meaning for the word "trilogy".

All three novels are united by the common syllable of the narrative: they notice the ability of the French writer to intrigue, to cling to the reader an exciting story. Books about the three musketeers have a rich content, they have many actors, rapidly developing events - interesting, living, unpredictable and realistic.

The researchers believe that the musketeers actually existed. Maybe this is the secret of success of the trilogy?

The dramatic side of works

Dumas devoted a lot of attention to the tension of the narrative, to the dramatic side. The author did not find inspiration in the events taking place in his time, and therefore paid tribute to adventure novels in which the main characters are courageous, active, maybe even a little adventurers.

At the same time, they have the noble features of true knights, and their slogan reflects loyalty to friendship and devotion to the cause.

Unlike trilogies, which are perceived as one whole, with the works of the three musketeers, this is not quite so. The most popular was the first, the same name, and the other two, though revered as true admirers of A. Dumas, still did not have such fame. The motto "One for all and all for one" did not work in these circumstances.

"Lord of the Rings"

The fantasy trilogy of Tolkien is capable of breaking all records by popularity. If there are individuals who are not acquainted with it, then people who have not even heard of it, for sure. It forms the laws of the genre and inculcates love for it.

Considering the "Lord of the Rings" as a trilogy, one should take into account such facts: the author intended to write one book, although quite voluminous. Publishers also considered it appropriate to divide it as much into three publications. However, this does not prevent and to this day release the "Lord of the Lord" as a trilogy in one book.

But such circumstances give works the features peculiar to them exclusively. So, for example, parts of the trilogy, if they have independence, are to a very small extent. Even to read only the first book ("Brotherhood of the Ring") apart from the rest is strange and wrong. Unity as a feature of the trilogy is expressed in the "Lord of the Rings" to the greatest extent. That is, the book is indicative not only with respect to the observance of the canons of the fantasy genre, but also the standard for the design of cycles.

Cinema Interpretations

The famous trilogy "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit", representing the union of works in the cinema, are not in the book version.

The screen version of "The Lord of the Rings" was so successful that the "Hobbit" with the light hand of director Peter Jackson became a trilogy. But the publication about the adventures of the non-senility is a small book, which is why the film has acquired details of the story that were not in the story, and characters that appear only in the "Lord", or even not appearing at all.

Youth dystopia

The modern trilogy is anew the revived form of the text. Lately, several books have appeared that are suitable for this term, and three of them (which symbolically) have gained wide popularity.

We are talking, of course, about the "Hunger Games", "Divergent" and "Running in the Labyrinth". Unfortunately, they are not those representatives of the literary world who brought something innovative to it. These are teenage franchises, which boil down to the principle of "a hero against the whole world."

Traits of trilogies they inherit very accurately: the unity of the plot and continuity are seen, the development of the characters is observed throughout the narrative, and the intrigue begun in the first book is gradually revealed in the second and, ultimately, finds its final in the third.

Of course, the screen version did not keep you waiting, and they absolutely repeat the story and the composition of their book analogs.
