The NTFS file system and its features

Each operating system uses its own standard of data storage. This is understood as the type of file system. Windows is currently one of the most popular for personal computers, it introduces new technologies and ideas to improve efficiency. The NTFS file system stands for New Technology File System, which means the file system of the new technology. It was specifically designed for the operating system family of Windows systems.

The NTFS file system was introduced in June 1993, but it was introduced much later, when all the nuances were worked out, and there was a need for it. Before it was used the FAT system, which could not cope with new tasks, namely the emergence of new types of data, large files and other. NTFS supports the work with metadata, is able to structure information independently, in order to improve performance.

All these advantages have made it possible to achieve greater efficiency than the FAT and HPFS systems. In this case, the work was combined, as well as the strengths of each system, to get something new, capable of reaching a higher level. NTFS is able to perform all the standard operations for reading, writing and storing files, but it is more efficient in terms of implementing the recovery capabilities of the system. And the file system NTFS can work even on hard disks of large volumes, which was at that time one of the basic requirements.

With the development of computer systems, there was a need to improve security, this task was to be performed, including, through a new file system. Computers have become more active in the corporate environment, so there are specific requirements. The features of this file system extend to the user's private privileges. This is the basis for creating reliable security tools for corporate data.

Using NTFS in different operating systems

The NTFS file system is supported by many operating systems, not just the Windows family. Other examples include free Linux and Apple Mac OS X installed on computers. It is accepted as some average data storage format. NTFS implements an improved work with file permissions, in particular, the user gets a lot of opportunities to work with them.

In general, the development of the system did not represent something complicated, but in the end a powerful tool was obtained. The idea boiled down to a certain structuring of all the file data in this system. Everything is merged into one file, and all disk space is divided into sectors. Even metadata, i.e. Data belonging to the file system itself is subject to general rules.

Due to this arrangement of information and its structuring, higher reliability indicators are achieved. The user can, how to restore the file system, and conduct other operations. Also, he will always know how to change the file system, because the OS itself often provides the ability to format any media in the desired file system.

In the NTFS file system, each file is given certain types of information, allowing you to determine its position and properties. MFA is the main file table that occupies a certain segment on a disk or volume. It uses general information about each file. MFT is a mirror record, stored in two copies in case one is damaged. MFT stores information about disk segments and their location, and this information is duplicated in the logical center of the disk. To restore files, you need another entry in the MFT - these are logs or log files.
