One of the three "bestial" bridges

The visiting card of the cultural capital of Russia is the bridges that preserve the spirit of history, created by talented craftsmen. Among the huge number of city crossings on the Neva are the so-called animal beasts. These are the most interesting constructions, built and decorated by famous authors P. Sokolov and V. Tretter.

One of the most interesting pedestrian constructions is the "Lion Bridge" in St. Petersburg, which is the main attraction of the historic city. The architectural monument is almost 28 meters long and is always full of tourists who take pictures with pleasure in a pendant structure adorned with powerful figures of snow-white lions.

Popular attraction

The chain "Lion Bridge" near the Griboedov Canal opened on July 1, 1826. On this day, almost three thousand local residents passed through it, attracted by a unique appearance of the structure, on both sides of which towered two-meter animal sculptures. Lviv was made at the ironworks of the city and painted under marble.

After its opening, the local attraction began to gain popularity not only in St. Petersburg, but also abroad. The famous architect from Germany Hesse, delighted with the original bridge, set out to recreate his smaller copy, which was later installed in the Berlin park Tiergarten. True, the span structure and railings were made of wood.

Terrible animals, according to the idea of the authors, serve not only as the main decoration of the majestic structure: inside the hollow sculptures there are various mechanisms and fastenings on which the "Lion Bridge" is based. The original figures, consisting of two halves, were cast from cast iron. On their backs and chest, even with the naked eye, you can consider the joint seam.

Reconstruction

The townspeople were amazed at the discrepancy between the monumental figures and the elegant structure, decorated with an openwork grille, which gave the construction an ease. Unfortunately, in the XIX century it was replaced by an ordinary iron fence. The hexagonal lanterns that illuminated the Lion's Bridge were removed, and the animal's figures changed into a dark shade. Only in 1954 the building was rebuilt, returning the missing parts of the structure. And after 56 years, the sculptures were repainted in the original color.

Signs associated with the bridge

Several old city legends are associated with the oldest bridge. One of them says that a person who will stand between the lions and reach the figures with fingertips will be happy, and his cherished desire will come true . Two centuries ago, when there was no ultrasound, there was a sign that allowed to determine the sex of the baby: the expectant mother got up on the "Lion Bridge" and waited for who would rise to him first - a man or a woman. Most often the prediction was coming true. Tourists passing through the historical monument, necessarily make a wish and tinder the muscular animal paws.
