The city of Grozny is the capital of Chechnya. Description, history, photo

The city of Grozny is the capital of Chechnya. Its name comes from the fortress of the same name, founded in 1818. This name was reinforced by the fact that at that time the surrounding area was the hottest and tense point in the North Caucasus. Later around the fortress grew a city. His date of education is December 30, 1869. What is the capital of Chechnya? Its appearance and internal policy are described in the article.

The Formation of Ivan the Terrible

The indigenous inhabitants of Grozny do not call it that. The name "City of Sunzha" is more common, which in translation from the Chechen language means "formidable". It was formed thanks to a river with the same name, on which the fortress of the same name was founded in due time. Therefore, to answer the question of why the capital of Chechnya is called Grozny, it is enough to mention this construction.

At the very beginning of the XIX century, there were talks about moving the Chechen capital from Grozny to another, less destroyed city. But the head of state, Akhmad Kadyrov, categorically opposed it. He justified his protest by the fact that too many historical events are connected with the city so that it is possible to remove the status of the capital of the Chechen Republic so easily and painlessly from it.

Chechnya as a proving ground

On the territory of Chechnya, two large-scale military operations took place. During the First Chechen War , the storming of Grozny was carried out, and besieged the city from four sides. The conflict was caused by the fact that the government of the republic refused to take into account the requests of the president of the Russian Federation to settle the events taking place in Chechnya. And there at that time, groups of armed men carrying weapons without any permission were often observed. The attempt to negotiate also led to nothing. As a result, after the end of hostilities, the city of Grozny was taken under the control of the troops of the Russian Federation.

Five years later, the capital of Chechnya was again attacked, and again the settlement was left under the control of Russian troops. This time the reason was the fact that Islamists, who made a number of terrorist acts, penetrated from Dagestan from Chechnya. The attack on Grozny was part of the Second Chechen War, which lasted from 1999 to 2000.

Climate

The climate in the city differs from the weather of Krasnodar, located at the same latitude. Here the colder winter is due to strong northern winds. The air temperature in the cold season can be lowered to -20 degrees. The capital of Chechnya has a fairly long and hot summer. The column of the thermometer often rises to a mark of 35 degrees, and it's in the shade! To explain such a difference between summer and winter temperatures can be due to the fact that the city is in a strip of temperate continental climate. Hence, there are interesting climatic conditions.

Population

The capital of Chechnya is a fairly large city. Its population reaches 287,000 people. The overwhelming majority, namely 93%, is the indigenous people of the republic - Chechens. Thus, the city is on the 69th place in terms of the population among all cities of the Russian Federation.

Religion

The main religion, confessing in such a large center as the capital of Chechnya (photo is in the article), is Islam. It prevails in the whole of Chechnya. A few years ago, in 2009, a special complex for Muslims was formed. It is located in the heart of the city. There is also a huge mosque, which is called "Heart of Chechnya". This grandiose building even has its own channels on television and its own radio studio.

There are also Christians in Grozny. They are an Orthodox community. Not long ago, in 2006, the Christian church of the Archangel Michael was restored. In addition, the church is making efforts to revive the Christian Baptist community.

Also in Grozny, until 1930, there was the Armenian church. She was in the center of the city. But, unfortunately, it was demolished under Soviet rule. At the same time, the reason for the demolition is not indicated.

University

There are only three institutions of higher education in Chechnya. And, more interestingly, they are all located in Grozny. The universities were established at different times: in the 20's, 30's and 80's of the XIX century. They have a long history that continues to this day, and a thorny path of development. It is necessary to note that it is difficult to enter into them, as higher educational institutions are not in abundance here, but want to obtain a sufficient number of diplomas.
