Retinal disinsertion

Detachment of the retina is a pathological process of the eye, in which the retina is separated for some reason or another from the vascular membrane. The causes of retinal detachment are various phenomena, including eye trauma, diabetic retinopathy, mesh shell degeneration and intraocular neoplasms.

Quite often detachment of the retina leads to a significant drop in the level of vision . The immediate cause of the pathology is usually the rupture of the mesh shell. In the case of rupture of the retina, the vitreous humor fluid seeps under the retina and separates the membranes. Often breaks of the retina appear with changes in the structure and composition of the vitreous body (an increase in the density of this substance and the development of strands that are connected to the retina). When the eye moves, the strands deform the retina, cause stresses on its surface and can lead to ruptures.

Retinal detachment has characteristic symptoms. Timely appeal to the ophthalmologist with the development of the following symptoms will help you save your eyesight:

  1. Appearance of a shroud before your eyes . Often, patients do not pay attention to this phenomenon and do not rush to consult a doctor, engaged in self-medication. If a veil appears before your eyes, remember which side of the development of the symptom begins, because by the time you contact a specialist, it can occupy the entire field of vision.
  2. Peculiar light flashes (in the form of sparks, lightning). Such phenomena often indicate the process of detachment of the reticular membrane and are a signal for an immediate visit to the ophthalmologist.
  3. Deformation of objects and loss of their individual areas from the field of view, distortion of letters and numbers. This symptom indicates damage to the central area of the mesh shell.

It should be borne in mind that detachment of the retina is not treated with drops or even injections. Adequate medical care for this pathology can be complex in nature (that is, it is a combination of different methods), but necessarily includes surgical treatment of retinal detachment. In order for the vision to recover as much as possible, a complex ophthalmic operation should be performed as soon as possible. In advanced cases of the disease, chronic inflammation of the eye structures may develop. In some cases, retinal detachment results in blindness.

For successful treatment of retinal detachment, the ophthalmic surgeon must first detect the retinal rupture, and then eliminate it. During the operation, a zone of inflammation is artificially created along the perimeter of the rupture, causing scarring, which makes it possible to secure the edges of the rupture. Modern technology allows you to treat retinal detachment through the laser or cryotherapy (cold exposure).

One can single out the following common methods of surgical treatment of pathology:

  • Circular or local filling of problem areas of the retina of the eye in the rupture zone;
  • Vitrectomy , that is, the surgical removal of a natural vitreous with the replacement of artificial materials, which are similar in their characteristics;
  • Laser coagulation is the surgical limitation of the rupture area with the help of a medical laser beam.

For prevention or timely detection of retinal detachment, we recommend that you visit the ophthalmologist on time. A timely diagnosis will allow to identify the disease and conduct its treatment with minimal means. Traumatic injuries of the mesh shell can always be avoided, observing the elementary requirements of safety in everyday life and on rest, and also following safety rules during the performance of labor duties.
