Patron of the desert, storms and fury - the Egyptian god Seth

The religion of Ancient Greece is still of special interest and admiration . But no less fascinating is the faith of the ancient Egyptians, who also believed in many gods, sacrificed and honored them. The god of Ancient Egypt - Seth - is mysterious and possesses mighty power. Not having a permanent appearance, the ruler of the storm in the desert - Seth - was one of the most powerful in the Egyptian beliefs.

The patron of the power of the pharaohs is the god Seth

The very name of the Egyptian god stands for the pillar of stability, which is connected with the power over the desert on one side, and on the other - with the power of the pharaohs. Seth God appeared in the Egyptian beliefs only as the ruler of the desert, at first his authority was not so strong, he accompanied the caravans walking through the sand deserts. And over time, when the Egyptians imagined that most of the Earth's cover is made up of sand, Seth was rewarded with more power. He began to control the weather in the desert, sandstorms and fierce dusty winds, destruction, carrying death for themselves - all this was subject to Seth. He was worshiped by the ancient Egyptians, believing that by offering donations to the deity, they will be able to appease him and protect himself from the sandstorm and death. Thanks to his power, the god Seth became the main deity of Lower Egypt, especially Ombos, where he was worshiped most.

Over time, the power of Set began to confer on the pharaohs, because he was considered the strongest in this sandy area. Accordingly, and Pharaoh had to have a strong power to govern the people. Often, to their name, the pharaohs applied the name of Set as a constituent. The god Seth was portrayed with red eyes, so everything associated with red color, including the red hair color, unusual for the Egyptians, began to bind to him. Therefore, Seth was also a patron of foreigners and foreign caravans.

Family of Seth. How was he portrayed?

The great future was destined to be a deity even before birth, since Seth is a god born from the reunion of two powerful forces: the god of the earth of Hebe and the heavenly deity Nut. Osiris, Isis and Nephthys he was a brother. Despite the relationship, the goddess of fertility Nephthys became the wife of Seth, who had several of them. You can distinguish the Anat, Tautt, Ashtoreth, but nothing is known about the heirs of the mighty god, perhaps they did not exist at all.

Before the unification of the state of Seth, one was depicted as the supreme deity of Lower Egypt, and during the unification for the championship he had to fight with God Horus, who ultimately won him. Since that time, the god Seth was portrayed with Horus, a little behind him.

What did Seth look like? Egyptologists say that his unusual appearance is an animal of Seth, as they called him. He had burning red eyes, square long ears, a slightly crooked mysterious face, thanks to which the name "Seth's animal" appeared, and human legs. With the dog's trunk, he managed to stand on two legs. He could look like an anteater, and a dog, as well as a hippopotamus. The fact is that there was no single image of the god Seth among the Egyptians, he was zoomorphic.
