Lenovo G500S: specifications, features

In 2013, Lenovo updated their series of devices under the article G. The updated line was designed to replace inexpensive devices of office workers. One of the key gadgets in the lineup was the Lenovo G500 notebook, which was later updated and re-released in a lighter and thinner case and named Lenovo G500S (which probably means Slim or Small). Consider a gadget in more detail. Is there enough power for comfortable work and is it worth it to spend on it your own blood?

Design and communication

The exterior design of the laptop is rather boring. The main material for the case is matte black plastic. The laptop has a strict and calm style and does not stand out. Glossy elements are missing, which positively affects the presentability of the laptop. The inside of the laptop, unlike the cover, is decorated with a texture in the form of thin longitudinal strips. The computer was very thin and light. For this you will have to pay for the frailty of the hull. Noticeable deflections across the entire area of the laptop and creaking. A distinctive feature of the case is its convenient to modification and repair design. Since dismantling the Lenovo G500S is very simple, it is easier to care for and maintain.

Communication interfaces are located on two faces. On the right side are Kensington Castle, CD drive, USB 2.0 port, "card reader", a combined audio port. On the left side there is a jack for connecting the power supply, VGA port, standard network port, HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard is a weak point Lenovo G500S. The first problem is a mechanism built on the basis of a rubber membrane, because of which the keyboard flexes strongly during printing. The second problem is the cropped Shift and Backspace keys, which will cause discomfort when typing quickly. The keys are flat, with a slight bend at the bottom of each. For the daily use of the keyboard, of course, enough, but journalists will not last long.

Under the keyboard is a small touchpad with a rough surface. The finger slides well, it does not leave any streaks. The touchpad recognizes the touch of several fingers at once.

Display

The device has a touch panel manufactured by Samsung with a diagonal of 15.6 inches. The resolution of the display reaches 1366 x 768 points. Aspect ratio 16: 9, which favorably affects the viewing of media content. Almost all videos on YouTube and most of the film novels support this aspect ratio. The display is built on a basic TN-matrix, which, alas, does not shine with quality. The color range is limited, the brightness is much worse than that of competitors. The glossy panel does not correct the situation, but only exacerbates, adding glare and reflections when working in the sun. Viewing angles are not maximum.

Performance and memory

The characteristics of the Lenovo G500S can not be called brilliant. This computer is suitable only for simple office work or communication in Skype. The heart of the notebook was the energy-intensive Intel Pentium 2020M chip with a maximum frequency of 2,400 megahertz. Its power is enough to work comfortably with embedded system applications, but when running programs that require large processing power, problems arise, even to the hang of the system.

Most of the time, for graphics performance, the built-in video subsystem, which operates while working in the browser, with mail and reading, responds. When starting games, discrete graphics from Nvidia supporting DirectX 11 are connected. The computer copes with simple games with a bang, but with AAA-class game projects can not be able to cope, you can count on more or less distinct performance only in games of 2010-2012.

Also in the laptop was a place for 4 gigabytes of RAM and a hard disk with a capacity of 500 gigabytes. The volume is not the most impressive, but this is enough for the bulk of users. The rest can do an "upgrade" and add another 4 gigabytes of RAM, as well as a modern SSD-disk, which, despite the presence of the old processor, will be able to give the computer a second life.

Autonomy, heat and noise

Despite the fact that the "stuffing" of the gadget is rather weak and was clearly created with a reference point for long-term autonomy, during tests the laptop showed not the best result of the operating time from one charge. Due to testing it turned out that the laptop can live:

  • 6 hours in standby mode;
  • 1 hour under maximum load;
  • 3 hours in mixed use;
  • 3 hours when watching HD video.

A fairly modest result, which will deteriorate over time, and quickly.

The temperature of the notebook stably keeps within 25-30 degrees on the entire surface, with a rare exception. At maximum load, the upper left corner is heated to 40.

Noise level is minimal. Even when working with "heavy" applications and games, the noise level rarely rises above 30 decibels. It is almost impossible to hear it, especially in the working environment.

Instead of concluding

In general, the gadget is difficult to call successful, but if you consider the price as the main criterion, the impression changes slightly. Given the low cost (from 21 thousand rubles), this computer is forgiven very much, and feedback on the Lenovo G500S is confirmed.

Pros:

  • Very thin and light for its category.
  • More basic competitors.

Minuses:

  • BIOS Lenovo G500S requires an update.
  • Very weak processor.
  • Screen with low resolution.
