Labeled, numbered, multi-level list in Word: ways to create

Lists in text documents are needed. These are far from the most important components, but they play a certain role in the editing and design of the text. Therefore, it is useful to learn how exactly multi-level lists are created and what features should be paid attention. On how to create a multi-level list in Word, read on. The secrets and recommendations are presented in your article.

Use in practice

The various lists in the "Word" are not the main component of text editing. Nevertheless, users very often apply them. Marking helps to visually highlight the right moments in the text, which you need to pay attention to.

In general, a multi-level list is the most difficult option. Besides it, in Word there are still numbered and marked. In practice, they occur much more often. The former are used for information that is the same type and can be numbered. The latter are needed for enumeration or for data that can not be numbered.

But a multilevel list is a list of numbered or labeled components. It is usually used for complex classification and ordering of data. Most users do not work with such hierarchical lists, but this does not negate the possibility of creating them. What if you needed to do this or that type of list?

Markers and their application

So, the first and simplest version is editing the already existing text. It turns out that formatting and creating lists is much easier than some users think. Especially in the case of primitive forms of these - marked or numbered.

To begin with, you need to type a small text that is several lines in size, where you plan to make the marking. After that, select the area that should be converted to the list. Now click on the right mouse button and select the item under the name "List" from the pop-up menu. Then go to the "Marked" tab. It remains only to choose some option from the existing templates and click on the "OK" button.

Numbered list

Now you need to learn how to create numbered lists, because they help you better understand hierarchical lists. In principle, it is not difficult to create a numbered list. The process is no different from the previously proposed option.

Again, type the text and select the site intended for registration. Then, by right-clicking the mouse and selecting "List", you can continue to conceive. In the window that appears, go to the "Numbered" tab and select one of the suggested design templates there. Confirm your choice - and it's done.

But it is necessary to know that these methods are easily implemented in the old versions of MS Office. It is these methods that help in this program without any problems to make out the text in the form of a list.

Multilevel list: the nuances of execution

What else is worth paying attention to? The fact is that in different versions of Office lists are implemented by various methods. This is due to changes that the Word interface has undergone.

What does it say about the creation of such an object, as a list, computer science? A multi-level list in older versions of the "Word" can appear without problems in the already printed text. That is, you will have to perform all of the above manipulations. Namely:

  • Print the text;
  • Select the desired area;
  • Select the "List" item after clicking on the selected area;
  • Go to the "Multi-level" tab and choose the style;
  • Click on "OK" and confirm your choice.

However, depending on the chosen style of the list, you will see either marked or simply numbered stochki. This is a normal phenomenon because the level you have to set yourself.

Setting Levels

How to do it exactly? A multi-level list in Word is not automatically created: you first have to establish a hierarchy, and then already deal with the levels. But this task is fairly easy to do if you know the algorithm.

How can I create a multi-level list? After carrying out the above manipulations, it is necessary to put the cursor at the beginning of the line, which should be "moved" and give it the status of a subitem. Next, you have to click on the tab (tab) button on the keyboard. You will notice how the line shifted to the right, resulting in a new level.

By means of a tabulator it is possible to create sub-items in the corresponding lists. One click - shift to the level. To return to the previous position, just delete the formed shift-space. To do this, use the Backspace key.

Task bar

Lists (numbered, marked and multilevel) in Word are created in several ways. We analyzed the first one in detail. But how else can you cope with the task?

Regardless of the type of lists you need, there is another way to create them. True, it is most easily embodied in the old versions of MS Office. In Word 2010, this option is not suitable. This is due to the changes that the program interface has learned. Therefore, it is necessary to consider both earlier versions, and new ones.

The algorithm of actions in the old releases of the application is extremely simple. Creating a multilevel list occurs through the use of the taskbar. Find the "Format" item there, previously selecting the area you need to edit. Before you will be a long list of possible operations. In it, click on the already familiar item - "List".

Now, in the window that appears, select the desired tab (bulleted, numbered or multilevel) and the finished list style, and then save the changes. That's all. So usually work in Word 2003. It though and old, but habitual program of editing and creation of text documents.

Keys as a formatting tool

The next option is suitable for all Word. It does not matter which version of the "Office" you have - to realize the idea, life will turn out without any special problems. True, not everyone knows this version of the solution of the problem. Usually it is implemented during the writing of the text.

At the beginning of the line, you need to put the following "*" (asterisk), and then start writing the text. When you move to a new line, you will see that the bulleted list has turned out. Now finish writing all the points and sub-paragraphs that take place.

It just remains to create the required number of levels. To do this, use the Tab key again: move the cursor to the beginning of the future sub-point, then click on the specified button. You will get a hierarchical list. Such manipulations should be done with all the formatted text.

What if I need to create a multilevel numbered list? To do this, at the beginning of the line, type not "*", but one with a period and a space. As in the past case, just create the entire text of the list, and then, using the Tab, set the levels. This is a universal method of creating hierarchical lists from the text at the time of its collection.

Adding Items

How do I add new items to an existing list? To perform a line shift to a lower level, use Tab. And how to create a string, if you work with text that is only typed?

In this case, just press the Enter key after completing the set. In simple words, go to the new paragraph, but do not use the keyboard shortcut to break the line.

New versions of MS

What if you are working in later versions of Word? For example, in those that followed already after the habitual many "Office 2003"? In this case, you can use the above method, but it is not popular, because sometimes it can take up to several hours to edit the list.

Therefore, it is better to use the capabilities intended for the finished text. While in Word 2010 or 2007, select the entire fragment that you want to design as a multilevel list. Then go to the toolbar in the "Home" → "Paragraph" tab. Now all the necessary items will be here.

On the panel that appears, select the right button: for clarity, there is a thumbnail of a list with several levels. This is exactly what you need. By automatically appearing the template, the selected text section will be formatted. You will have to create the levels yourself using Tab.

By the way, numbered and bulleted lists are also made using the section "Paragraph". Just click on the corresponding button on the panel. The first one usually serves for labeling, and the second one for numbering.

Style Selection

In "Word 2010" or in Word 2007 you are also able to immediately choose the style of your multilevel list. How to do it? To do this, go to the "Home" tab, and then find the "Paragraph" sub-item. In this area there are buttons for managing lists, or rather creating them.

To select the style of interest, you need to click on the arrow on the right side of each button. Immediately on the screen will appear all sorts of ready-made templates. They are for hierarchical lists, and for ordinary lists. Then select the desired template by clicking.

Editing

This is not the end of the task. The fact is that styles - examples of multilevel lists, as well as numbered and marked, shown when selecting a template - can be edited. Even your own options can be created in Word!

It will be necessary to show attentiveness and even imagination. You should go to Word 2007 (or 2010) in the "Home" tab, and then look for "Paragraph" there. Now click on the small arrow at the bottom right of the icon with the bulleted list.

Before you will be a small list of ready-made templates. To create your own style, click at the bottom of the box to read "Define New." You will now see a field in which you will have to customize the style of the levels in the list. You can insert any image in the form of a marker or simply use numbering in this or that style.

Next, it only remains to create your own style of the future hierarchical list, and then to format the text using the Tab key on the keyboard. Perhaps, this is the most difficult thing in creating this object. Examples of multi-level lists, shown in the images, are created through ready-made templates. But you are able to independently choose the appearance of these lists.

In general, the style can be set, as already mentioned, for regular lists: bulleted or numbered. In the first case, you can even install a photo as a marker. But this is not recommended, because the object will be reduced to certain sizes. So the image on the photo no one will see. Therefore, it is desirable to use either pictures (small) or ready templates.

The article suggested possible ways of creating lists that can help both in the work and everyday activities of the average PC user.
