Is it simply beautiful or extremely necessary?

"Clothes are beautiful when their back is beautiful," said Coco Chanel. Her golden words can be supplemented, saying that attention should be paid not only to the quality of the seams, but also to subtle details, one of which is the slot. This is a special kind of cut, which can be performed on any product. How it is remarkable and how to do it - read below.

What is it?

So, the slot is a part of the product, which is a cut, processed by a special technology. It can be present on any clothing, be it a jacket, coat or dress, but most often occurs on skirts. Unlike an ordinary cut, in which the right and left sides are the same, the structure of the splines is such that one half overlaps the other.

Most often the slot is located on the back of the middle seam of the product, but in some cases it can be seen on the sleeves, on the front or side seams. Some tailors say that for proper processing of the splines, a lining is necessary. But in fact, Slots - this is an element that can be cut from any fabric, including the main one.

Purpose of this part

Any cut on the product is created in order to give more freedom to movements, to make the thing more comfortable. On narrow dresses of the model case and skirts of the pencil model there is always a stepping slot, whose height is on the average 10 cm. The second function of this detail is decorative. It happens that in the context there is no urgent need, but without it, the thing ceases to be stylish.

Often, decorative slots are sewn from a material different from the main material, contrasting in color. And of course, the slot is stylish and respectable. Well, where did you see the fitted male jacket without a small incision behind it? Did you see real Italian coats, whose back seam would be tightly sewn? Without such seemingly insignificant elements, expensive things would not be so elegant and refined.

Constituent elements

Stepping slot on the skirt in the classical version consists of the following elements: left and right panel, angle or ledge, allowance and obtachka. All these elements are fastened together by a single diagonal seam, which is visible from the outside of the product. Slits of outer clothing have a similar design, wherever they are. Also worth mentioning is that these structures are strengthened with additional glue elements, so that they do not skew the edges of the product. But we will consider this aspect in more detail later.

Pattern Slots

Beginners need to know that there is no slots on the patterns. Anyone who sews is not the first thing, knows that the size and location of this part should be drawn directly on the fabric. To do this, you should consider the length of the product and the location of the waist - normal, inflated or understated. To build a slot directly on the fabric is simple - you need to add to each rear half of the thing to 2 centimeters. If you are sewing from a very dense material, then increase this figure to 3.

Adhesive elements

It was noted above that the spline must be glued, firstly, in order to firmly bond all of its components among themselves, and secondly, in order to provide the product with an aesthetic appearance. On the non-woven fabric we cut out two strips. Their length should be slightly shorter than the length of the splines. As for the width, then for the strip for the left side of the product it should be 5 centimeters, and for the right - 2 cm. Stick the fleece must on the wrong side of the product itself.

Processing Slots

After you have worn the two rear halves of the product, press the allowances. Details of the splines must be folded on the left side and also traversed by an iron. For greater accuracy, it is recommended that the chalk line a bend line on the cut, since there the seam will not be laid. After that, it is necessary to process slots and allowances with a zigzag stitch. Sometimes, if the fabric is heavily crumbled, they need to be slightly bent and only after that to lay a line. When all the internal seams have been processed, you can proceed to the hem of the bottom.

Tell me, what are you sewing?

For tailors, the most common work, of course, is the slot on the skirt. First, in this particular thing, the cut is not only an aesthetic aspect, but also has a practical meaning. Secondly, the skirt is one of the simplest in sewing things. Beginners and amators are most often taken for this product, as for outerwear requires a lot of experience and skills. But as for sewing directly slots, this technology is the same everywhere. Such cuts are cut out and processed equally regardless of the thing itself and the location. That is, the slot of the sleeve, the cut on the coat or jacket will be built according to the technology described above, just like for a narrow skirt.

A bit of history

Many centuries ago the slot was cut exclusively on riding suits. Similar cuts were equipped with long coats, coats and other masculine elements of the wardrobe. Over time, clothing, at any rate male, became increasingly narrow and concise, therefore, there was a need for details that would ensure freedom of movement. So, gradually, from the rider accoutrements, Slots migrated into everyday images of ordinary people. Moreover, tailors have clearly developed the technology of its cut and sewing, which we strictly adhere to this day.

Today, after hearing the word "slot", first of all we represent the cut on the skirt, which is made in a special way. However, literally 100 years ago this accessory could boast exclusively male toilets. In the women's wardrobe Slots came in only with the names of such famous designers as Coco Chanel, Christian Dior and Hubert Jivanshi.
