Independent director Joe Carnahan. Filmography

Joseph Aaron "Joe" Carnahan - American film producer, screenwriter, actor and independent filmmaker - was born in the last spring month of 1969 in Delaware. Adolescence and adolescence, the future of the direction was directed in the tightened smog of Detroit (Michigan) and the town of Fairfield, lost in the sunlit expanses of California. His creative career, he, like many other now famous filmmakers, began in the field of advertising, simultaneously shooting short films.

Debut in a big movie

Joe Carnahan literally broke into the world of big cinema in 1998 with the debut hard, cool and extremely realistic comedy thriller in the Australian style called "Blood, arrogance, bullets and gasoline" (IMDb: 5.50). The filmmaker managed to make a film for a penny, attracted little-known actors to work on the project, even played the role of one of the central characters.

But even with a lamentable budget of $ 7,300 and a group of extras Joe Carnahan, whose films are now known to every movie fan, he managed to shoot a very worthy movie. The picture with such a long name and now looks quite relevant for the quality of shooting, editing and concept. But more of the flattering reviews deserved a script tape, which also wrote Carnahan. Already in the debut author's project, Joseph Aaron presented to the audience a fascinating story with a famously twisted climax and bright, well-written characters.

Narc

In 2002, Joe Carnahan, whose filmography as a director has only 8 paintings, in a record time (for some 28 days) removes the thriller Narc (IMDb: 7.20). The film with the light hand of domestic localizers, clearly oversimplified with the translation of the name, in the Russian Federation was released as a "drug baron".

The second project of the director is a cross between a police drama and an action-packed thriller. Its main advantage, according to experts, is the narrative's realism, the highest quality visualization and torn editing with regularly appearing multi-frame inserts. For the perception of a wide audience, the tape is very complicated. Ambiguous characters and almost complete lack of dynamics are of interest only to a narrow category of viewers who prefer proceedings in the characters' motives, carefully perceiving and analyzing what is happening on the screen.

"Non-stop action"

Joe Carnahan earned worldwide popularity in 2006 after the release of the action movie "Kozyrnye Aces" (IMDb: 6.70), which critics called an "explosive mixture." Inspired by the work of leading contemporary directors Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, the director has directed an uneven but amazingly fascinating crime drama with a whole gallery of talented performers and a gruesome action. Fascinated by the shooting process, the director personally took part in the creation of the film, his cameo became the role of one of the muggers in masks at the beginning of the picture.

The screen version of the series

Rightly assessing the professionalism and skill of the producer, Hollywood producers Stephen J. Cannell and Jules Daly entrusted Carnahan with directing the first large-budget film project. It was adapted to the modern screen adaptation of the most popular television film of the 80's - "Team A" (IMDb: 6.80). Comedy thriller caused a lot of heated arguments and failed at the box office.

Meanwhile, the most remarkable in the tape for the recognition of filmmakers was that Joe Carnahan was not shy of his sincere, somewhat childish attitude towards cinema. Watching the adventures of the "team" is not only interesting, but also really fun. Excessive pathos and unreal trickery are brightened up with a fair amount of humor and a vigorous development of the plot. In general, the adaptation of the television movie was successful, so the director with a clear conscience began the next project, whose budget was much more modest than Team A ($ 25,000,000 vs. $ 110,000,000).

Purely male cinema

The thriller with Liam Neeson in the main role fell to the taste of a broad audience and demanding film critics. The rating of "Contract" according to IMDb version was 6.80. By choosing R as the age limit, that is, viewers under the age of 17 during the viewing are necessarily accompanied by an adult, the director has not lost. In the drama played out on the screen, one after another, extremely cruel, and not nauseatingly naturalistic episodes. The director skillfully maintains the rhythm of the narration, if necessary diluting the tense situation with philosophical monologues about the magical power of sincere love and the sense of being.

In the thriller "Fight" Joe Carnahan, rightly prioritizing and correctly focusing on the necessary nuances (in the movie there is not a single character of the fair sex with the exception of women popping up in the memories of male heroes), achieved the highest intensity of emotions with minimal amount of costs.

At the moment, the director is busy shooting the third part of the canonical comedic action movie "Bad Guys", which is scheduled for 2018.
