How to independently make a quad bike from the "Ural"

To date, old Soviet-made motorcycles are increasingly being sent for recycling or for scrap metal reception points. And there are reasons for this. Firstly, it is very difficult to keep an old motorcycle due to a large deficit of spare parts, and secondly, frequent breakdowns can make even the most adequate motorcyclist out of himself. So it turns out that they either stand in the yard and rust, or they understand and leave "for spare parts." However, some craftsmen give a second life to Soviet transport, making it a quad bike. The most popular platform for this was the motorcycle "Ural". How to make a quad bike from the Urals, read further in our article.

Stages of manufacture

In total, 4 stages are divided, of which the technical development of this mode of transport consists:

  1. Modernization of the frame.
  2. Installation of another engine and gearbox.
  3. Remodeling the suspension.
  4. Painting and installation of a new dashboard.

What materials do we need to work?

In order to independently manufacture a self-made ATV from Ural 4x4, we will need the following set of spare parts:

  • Tie Rod.
  • Two new bridges.
  • Brake system.
  • Shock absorbers.

Among the main tools it is necessary to allocate a welding machine, as well as a Bulgarian. In the absence of them, it is simply impossible to complete a full assembly of the ATV.

Management type

Before you start the modernization work, you need to decide what type of control the future vehicle will have. It can be either a motorcycle or a helmsman. In the latter case, the standard steering wheel from the Urals is ideal, but in the second one you will have to purchase additional spare parts. And of course, all this together with the future frame design is applied to the ATV drawing. From the "Urals" in this case will be a real beast, which can easily overcome any roadblocks.

Frame

At the initial stage, it is necessary to make technical adjustments to the design of the standard frame. In our case, we move the pipe of the vertical seat posts 4 cm backward, then weld the bridge, the fork to the pendulum of the motorcycle and cut off the rear posts. How to make an ATV from the Urals by yourself? From metal pipes we make special struts and mount them next to the hub bushings. Details such as the rear trunk and frontal bumper can be made from a thin-walled pipe section of 30 millimeters. In order for the welding machine not to burn metal, we set its power to the minimum.

Running system

How to make a quad bike from the Urals? First of all, pay attention to the rear suspension. There may be several options for modifying the system. The simplest of these is the installation of a regular propeller shaft together with a gearbox. Of course, this method is much simpler and faster than installing an automobile bridge, but do not forget that there will not be a differential in it.

In this regard, most owners decide to install bridges from a car. The most suitable option for this will be the domestic "Oka". But its weight is too big, which will be significantly reflected in the patency and dynamics of overclocking the car, so we will shorten it. The work is very painstaking, but the differential is already mounted in the bridge, which is very handy when driving on an asphalt road.

Quad bike with a shorter, more compact bridge, it will be much better to behave on the road. In order to refine this part of the suspension, we need to cut off the support cup and the spring bracket, and then remove the end flange from the socket. When we shorten the stocking, the last element is inserted back and the finished structure is fixed by welding. By the way, the cardan shaft can also be made from the semi-axes of the "Oka".

More opportunities in front of us open when designing the front suspension. Of course, comparing the weight of the future ATV, it is easy to guess how ridiculous will be the installation of automobile suspension levers. Therefore, to reduce the curb weight of the vehicle, we recommend that you make them by your own efforts, by choosing the right size for them. Most often, the front suspension is made of metal tubes measuring 25x25x2 millimeters. In this case, the rotary cams are taken from the car "Zhiguli". The brake system is best purchased separately.

Motor

We will have it standard, from the "Urals". However - due to the large mass of the ATV - our ICE will be very hot. In this regard, in order to avoid overheating of the engine, we set here forced air cooling from the G-8. It should also be noted that the greater the age and mileage of the donor car, the less reliable the design of our ATV will be. Therefore, try to pick the least worn out parts in the market.

Painting

After the technical part of the ATV is ready for operation, it's time to think about painting and illuminating. As for the first moment, the converted "Ural" will look great in the style of "khaki", but it's very difficult to make this color with your own hands. Therefore, we select the color that best matches this one. For example, very beautiful look quad bikes, painted in green metallic. In general, the style and hue of details of the cladding you can choose without any criteria. Do not forget to paint the "Ural" with metal profiles for a more natural look before painting.

Illuminations

Illumination is also chosen according to your taste. Of the headlights, many are advised to install the fog lights, which will act as a passing and driving light. Turns and stop lamps are selected as standard. But do not strongly zealous - this optics should not disfigure the appearance of the vehicle, but, on the contrary, emphasize it. At this stage, the question of how to make a quad bike from the motorcycle Ural with their own hands, can be considered closed. Immediately after painting and installing optics, it can be sent to the first test drive.

So, we found out how to make an ATV from the Urals with our own hands, as well as what spare parts are required for this.
