How to choose a mirror on the wall and how to fix it?

It is absolutely not necessary to be an expert to hang a mirror on the wall. It is only necessary to approach this issue responsibly and familiarize yourself with certain features of the installation.

Which mirror to choose

Not only for practical purposes are used in interior design mirrors. Today they often play the role of an effective design solution that allows you to increase the visual space, add room light and space.

From where the mirror will be installed, its choice depends. In the hallway, it should be large in size, so that any member of the family can see themselves in full growth. Hang such a mirror on the wall or fixed on the door of the cabinet.

For a bathroom it is better to purchase a mirror elongated in a vertical shape - oval or rectangular. It is desirable in this room to place two mirrors - the main and additional. The second is mounted on the opposite wall from the main one on a special bracket, allowing you to adjust the position. With his help, you can view the hair from all sides. The mirror frame located in the bathroom should be made of stainless steel or resistant plastic, because in other conditions of high humidity other materials are quickly destroyed.

What to look for when choosing

Mirror - this is a piece of interior, purchased not for one year. Therefore it is important not to make a mistake and get a really high-quality thing. Particular attention should be given to the coating. It can be made of silver or aluminum. The first one costs more, but it has very high reflecting qualities and a long service life. Buying a mirror on the wall, it is necessary to get acquainted with the quality certificate to exclude the presence of harmful substances, for example, lead in the coating.

The blue or green hue of the reverse wall of the mirror indicates its resistance to moisture. If the color of the cover is purple, then the quality of the product is low. The reflective surface of the mirror should be clean, smooth, without matte spots and air bubbles. The quality of the mirror can also be judged by a smooth edge. Scales and cracks are possible only on simply cut glass, in the absence of processing. Do not choose a large mirror on a wall made of thin glass - over time it will sag and distort the image.

Ways to mount mirrors

There are several mounting options. The choice of the most suitable one depends on the type of wall, design, dimensions and weight of the mirror. It can be fixed using special brackets, profiles or simply glued to the wall with adhesive tape or glue. The latter method is quite simple and very popular. The only exception is for him huge mirrors - on the wall they are better to attach a more reliable method.

How to glue a mirror

The first step is to prepare the surface of the wall for gluing. To do this, free it a place equal in area to the size of the mirror, removing a layer of wallpaper, tiles or other finishing material. If the thickness of this coating is greater than the thickness of the mirror, it will be necessary to fasten an additional substrate of plywood or drywall. The wall should be flat, so the surface of it must be puttied and treated with sandpaper.

The sticker of the mirror on the wall is made with special liquid nails. If you use glue instead, it is important that in the future it does not damage the amalgam. Do not apply glue to the very edges of the mirror, otherwise it can come out. If this does happen, immediately remove excess glue with a soft cloth. Mirror is fairly tightly pressed against the wall for 15 minutes, and you can consider the process of gluing finished. The only drawback of this method is that it is already impossible to outweigh the mirror to another location.

Adhesion of a mirror on an adhesive tape

First of all, it is recommended to cover the back of the mirror with a layer of water-based paint to protect the amalgam from possible damage. The surface of the wall where the mirror will hang is cleaned and degreased with alcohol or acetone. Before you hang a mirror on the wall, vertically every two inches of adhesive tape is glued on it every 15 cm , their length is 7-10 cm. The gap between them is filled with silicone sealant.

Mirror is applied to the wall in such a way that it lies on the sealant. And only after it is leveled in the right position, it is tightly pressed onto the adhesive tape and fixed. In the bathroom glue or scotch can only be used water resistant. This type of attachment is especially suitable when the question arises, how to hang a mirror without a frame on the wall. And also in those cases when there is no possibility to perform drilling. This method is often used when installing mirrors on a plasterboard surface.

Mounting large mirrors

A special mirror gives the room a large mirror. Place it at some distance from the floor, so that there is room for installing the plinth, and also to avoid possible damage. Such a mirror is fixed with the help of screws and special decorative holders.

Before you hang a mirror on the wall, the surface of it must be leveled. Then the markup is done. For this purpose, the mirror is pressed firmly against the wall and pencil marks the places for drilling through the holes that are available in it. After that, the mirror can be removed.

It is recommended to drill holes a little obliquely - from top to bottom. This will provide a more secure mount. If in the future even the fasteners loosen, it will be held by the wall itself.

After the holes are ready, a dowel is inserted into each of them. As an ordinary wooden stick it is suitable. For a drywall wall, it is better to use a special dowel, called a "butterfly".

When deciding how to fix a mirror on the wall, the use of self-tapping screws is a very reliable option. Before they are screwed, it is necessary to attach the mirror to the wall once again and make sure that all the holes coincide. To hide the places of fastenings and give the mirror a more aesthetic appearance, use decorative metal hats, screwed on top of the base of the insert.

Drilling holes in the mirror

How to hang a mirror without a frame on the wall, if it is not possible to use adhesive tape or glue? In this situation, self-tapes will help out. But not all mirrors are sold with ready-made holes. In some cases, they have to be drilled on their own. This task is rather difficult, so it is best to entrust such a thing to specialists. Almost everywhere there are workshops that deal with sharp glass. The special equipment available there will allow to make holes quickly and qualitatively.

If still decided to cope with this on their own, then a drill with a diamond drill will help out . First you need to determine the exact location of the future holes and degrease the surface with alcohol. During the drilling process, it is necessary to periodically cool the drill bit. For this, it is recommended to use a plastic bath with a bath of water, placing it on the place where the hole will be. You need to drill through it, pouring water if necessary. Before fixing the mirror on the wall, the edges of the finished holes are carefully sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. The whole process requires great care and accuracy.

Mounting mirrors with staples

Today, there are a huge number of different bracket holders for mirrors. They differ in the material from which they are made, in design and in design. These are very convenient devices that do not require drilling holes in the mirror.

You can attach a mirror and using self-made staples. For this, a thin substrate is cut from plexiglass or hardboard, to which are attached galvanized steel plates protruding slightly beyond the edges. From above "ears" are made for hanging the future design. Then the mirror is superimposed on this base, and the plates are bent to the mirror surface. It remains only to hang a mirror for the "ears" on the wall.

Mounting the mirror on the wall without drilling

If the mirror is not very heavy, it can be fixed without drilling holes in it. It is necessary to do this together. One person tightly presses the mirror to the wall, and the other is engaged in screwing self-tapping screws. They need to be screwed close to the upper and lower edges, after which they should be put on special decorative caps. At their expense, the mirror will stay strong enough.

All the work on the installation of mirrors, whatever method is used, must be done very carefully, so as not to damage the amalgam.
