How to braid a rope: a diagram and a step-by-step instruction

Any rope or cable, although it is made of good and strong steel, can at any time expand or even break. Despite the apparent complexity of the repair, it can be done by anyone who does not even have special skills. The most unpleasant thing in this situation is the possibility of collision with it in any place and exactly when such an accident is not expected at all.

Therefore, it will be superfluous to know how to properly braid a steel cable. Especially as this does not require any special tools or special skills. In the future, the cable will be able to weave both a hook and an earring. The strength of the structure will be high, and it will serve you more than one year. Before starting work, it is advisable to wear protective gloves, because the sharp ends of the veins of a steel cable can seriously damage your hands.

General information about cables

In the field of agricultural and transport engineering, in the construction, oil and coal industries, in the spheres of river and sea transport, ropes and cables are used in stainless or ordinary, but reliable and durable steel. They are usually used as the basis for various transport, lifting and road mechanisms. If you look at the rope from steel carefully, you can see that this is a flexible metal product consisting of twisted strands of steel wire. The number of strands in each individual cable can be different, as well as the number of wires, of which each of them is twisted. Over the strands, a zinc or aluminum coating is often applied to the cable, improving its anticorrosive qualities. Galvanized pipe (or stainless steel analog), covered with such a special composition, will last much longer than without it. If you do not know how to braid a steel cable, the diagram below will help you.

Inside the steel rope, there is usually a core, the main task of which is not to allow the transverse deformation in the product to develop and the twisted strands of wire to fall to the center. This is an obligatory attribute of any rope or rope made from organic, metal, natural or synthetic materials. In other words, the core is the inner frame for its strands. Knowing the device of steel ropes or ropes will help to understand how to properly braid the rope yourself.

Types of construction of steel cables

Steel cables are divided into three types on the wire:

  • Single;
  • Double;
  • Three-stranded.

In single cables, the wire of a single strand with one cross section is spirally wound in several layers. Usually the number of layers is from one to four. In double ropes, several strands are wound around the core. In the manufacture of three-strand ropes or ropes, several cables with different or identical cross-sections are used.

Varieties of cables in terms of flexibility

There are steel cables:

1. With increased flexibility. There are 24 wires around each core of the strand. In total such thin wires 144.

2. With standard flexibility. Twelve wires are placed around the core. In total there are 72 wires in such cables.

3. Mild cables. In their production, only 42 wires are used.

Varieties of ropes in the direction of the roll

1. Cross - strands are wound into the cable in the opposite direction to the direction of the wire roll.
2. One-sided - the direction is the same.
3. Triple - the first type of wire is used, but the wires and strands of the suite in different directions.
4. Combined - in such products, the left- and right-hand directions of the wrinkle are applied at the same time.

In addition, the cables are divided into rotary and makrokrutyaschiesya. The material from which the core is made also divides them into organic, single-stranded or steel wire.

Now you can consider in detail how to braid the rope yourself. Tools required in the performance of work:

  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • Nippers;
  • Scissors for metal;
  • wire;
  • Gloves.

How to braid a rope?

The scheme and algorithm of the process are not as complex as an inexperienced person might seem.

1. Cut the ends of the cable as smoothly as possible, and if the ends of it live bent or uneven, then we slightly weave each strand and cut the defective areas with scissors or cutters. It is convenient to chop off the ends by placing them on a metal rail or a sledgehammer and striking the same place with the sharp edge of the hammer. As a rule, after 10-15 such strikes, the ends of the cable are cut off.
2. At least half a meter from the edge we weave the cable into strands.
3. Determine the diameter of the future loop that we need and, measuring this distance from the edge of the unbroken cable, take 2 strands. To the diameter of the future loop, you need to add 3-5 cm, since it will necessarily decrease in size during the weaving. We make a loop from the selected strands, wrapping them.
4. Any end of the thread is untwisted and wound into stranded strands. The other must be wrapped in the opposite direction. If the length allows, then from the resulting three strands you can weave a braid, alternately weaving threads.
5. The third strand twists around the pigtail, then a loop is woven into it, and a circle turns around the braid again. Wire in the process of weaving is skipped in such a way that the previous one always goes to meet the next one.
6. Then all the ends of the wires are hidden inside the pigtail, and the resulting two strands with a screwdriver or flat-nose pliers are hidden inside.
7. It is desirable to tighten the resulting braid with clamps in two or three places. You can use ordinary wire, which is tightly wrapped around the cable and then tightly tightened pliers. The protruding ends of such a clamp are also hidden inside the pigtails so that they do not interfere.

At the end of the work, it is desirable to isolate the site of the operation, for example with an insulating tape. It will help to fasten the ends of steel wires together and prevent future damage to the hands of the person who will use this cable.

Speaking about how to braid a rope, it is necessary to remember: in order to get a strong and reliable connection, during laying it is necessary to lay strands symmetrically and evenly on them to press. Periodic crimping of twisted strands will be an additional guarantee that the entire structure will receive sufficient strength.

We make a loop on a steel wire

Often in addition to solving the problem of "how to braid the rope" there is a need for the formation of a loop at its end. For example, when repairing an extension on a towing wire or on an antenna, it becomes necessary to lower something to a depth, for example a submersible pump. Since the steel cable or rope is quite stiff, you can not just tie it with a knot at the end. In this case, nothing else remains, except how to braid the cable in a loop. And in this, too, there is nothing complicated. As well as to braid the cable with steel wire.

Process of performance of work

1. The ends of a conventional seven-stranded rope are cut off exactly by a Bulgarian or cut off with a hammer (its sharp part).
2. We unfasten the cable by 50-70 cm and by means of a screwdriver we divide it into two parts. In one, three strands are produced, and in the other four.
3. Let's knit the strands of both parts together.
4. Make a loop with a diameter of at least 10 cm.
5. We bend the first four-stranded part towards the other, which we place in the bends of the main cable.
6. The ends of the woven threads are alternately wrapped around an improvised cut.
7. Then each loose strand is twisted alternately around the cuttings, weaving into the loop, and repeat the process.
8. After that, applying the next to the previous one, cover the ends of all the strands. As a result of such manipulations, we obtain two strands, which must be placed with a screwdriver between the hinges. In this place it is better to seal up pieces of tubes, flattening them, or to use an insulating tape. This will help to avoid injury in the future.

Ogon on a rope or rope

Talking about how to braid a rope - steel or other material, it should be mentioned that you can make a fire. It's a bit more complicated. At some distance from the end of the cable a strong temporary stamp is made, the ends of its strands are fixed by the same marks. After that, the end of the rope should be disbanded.

In the form of a loop, the cable is laid on the surface (preferably firm), all of its strands are punched. Punching is done a few, but special attention is paid to the first, since it is the most important of them. The reliability and durability of the fire is mainly ensured by the first piercing. This is also an acceptable way of how to braid a rope. The scheme will not cause difficulties.

How to tie a loop on a rope?

If, for some reason, you decide to try to tie a loop, and do not untwist the rope and twist the strands, as discussed above, then you can use the old sea knot, the easiest one is the oak. The algorithm of this method of how to braid a steel cable is presented below:

  1. Fold the end of the cable halfway and wrap it in such a way that a ring is formed.
  2. The loop that formed at the end, thread into the ring and tighten securely. Get a strong and very reliable node. Its main drawback is that when tightened, it is very tightened and then it is quite difficult to untie it.

Now you can fix the steel cable yourself, because you know how to braid the cable in a loop, and henceforth such a breakage will not cause you any special trouble.
