Guy Gannik is a gladiator, film heroine and hero of his time

Gladiators have always been a popular topic for movies, plays and books. Many of these warriors became famous for centuries. One of them is Guy Gannik, the brave leader of the slave revolt, who died in the struggle for freedom.

Guy in history

Many historians believe that Guy Gannik, or, as Plutarch called it in his chronicles, Guy Cannicius, was born in the II century BC. E. Some people consider his homeland to be Gaul, others speak of Celtic roots. There is a version and that Guy belonged to the Samnites - the ancient Italian nationalities.

The captive Gannik became a gladiator and was sold to Capua to the gladiatorial school of Lentulus Batita, where he made friends with Spartacus, the future leader of the slave uprising.

In 73 BC. E. Guy became the head of a large detachment of rebels in southern Italy. In addition, the detachments were headed by Caste, Enomai and Crixus. In 71, Spartacus decided to lead his army to Thrace and Gaul. In the final stage of the uprising, when the capture of Brundisium was planned, Gannik, along with Caste, separated from the main army with 12,000 soldiers.

After a while, the rebels met with the Romans, who outnumbered slaves by a factor of 3 and were more professional soldiers. In the battle near Regi, Gaius Gannik was killed heroically.

Film career

In the movie, the image of Guy Gannik was used several times. In 1960, Stanley Kubrick shot the movie "Spartacus", where Gannika played actor Paul Lambert. After 44 years in the same film directed by Robert Dornhelm was also involved the image of a glorious gladiator, played by Paul Telf.

But the most beloved hero for the audience was Guy Gannik in the movie "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" and his sequel - "The Gods of the Arena", "Revenge" and "The War of the Damned."

In the film Guy is presented as a clever and calculating person, a real gladiator with the notion of honor, charisma and attractive appearance.

In the arena, this warrior is a real lion, in ordinary life he seeks to enjoy every pleasant moment. In ludus Batiata - he is the best. His friend Enomai and his wife Melitta are, in fact, the most native people. Although friendship sometimes creates some problems due to the emerging sympathy of Guy and Melitta.

Gannik received a rare opportunity to gain freedom and took advantage of it. At the opening of the new gladiatorial arena, he won the decisive battle and ceased to be a slave.

Unlike his prototype, Guy decided not to take part in the uprising with Spartacus, but to engage in his life. You can not call such a choice strange just because a person did not want to lose everything that he achieved with hard work.

Dustin Claire

Australian by origin, Dustin Clare, first received public recognition after the series "Delight", where he played Sean. For this work, he received the award as the most outstanding actor.

Gai Gannik actor brought a special popularity and recognition of the public. Also known for his role in the series "Belly Down" and Australian melodrama "Daughters of McLide", which brought him the award as the best young actor.

Work on image

Dustin, while creating his own idea of the character, kept in mind the image of Anthony Mendein, who was an aboriginal of Australia and a well-known boxer in his homeland. He, like Gannik, is an entertainer and showman in the ring. This does not prevent them from being real professionals in their field. To Guy you can experience different feelings, but it's impossible not to notice.

The director of the series tried to show the audience that the actors in the roles of gladiators are strong not only in spirit, but also physically. Therefore, many were trained in the handling of different types of weapons, intensively trained and maintained the necessary physical form. Guy Gannik (Claire's photo) confirms this to the fullest.

Some actors were injured during training and on the set, but the team of wonderful stuntmen made life of "gladiators" much easier. Claire's backup was Jacob Tomori, who performed particularly dangerous stunts. With him, Dustin had friendly relations throughout the filming process.

Claire learned to handle two swords at once. Obtained knowledge and skills in combat techniques, dance lessons, the actor plans to use in other roles.

Training in horse riding took most of the time, because in the series Gannik very often on horseback. Dustin even had to jump himself through the galloping horse. Not all attempts were successful, but in the end the scene turned out.

The actor's opinion about his character

Claire considers his character in many respects an anti-hero in opposition to Spartacus. "They have different traits of character, and this is what attracts them to each other: in one they are alike - both do not tolerate power over themselves and despise slavery."

According to Dustin, Gannik hides his true image behind some slovenliness, idleness and love for wine and women. When a gladiator receives such a coveted freedom, he goes on a journey in order to know the world and himself. On his return, the hero becomes more focused and disciplined, he clearly observes the inner core, which for a long time was visible only to the chosen.
