Galley - what is it? Description and photo galley

The culture of navigation and the maritime dictionary have evolved over the centuries. The names of the parts of the ship have their own specifics. For example, the galley is a favorite place for the whole crew of the ship. Throughout the history of navigation, he occupied an important place in the life of sailors.

Galley - what is it and what is its purpose

A galley is called a room on a ship, which is intended for cooking food. It occupies a separate place or a designated area, which depends on the size of the ship. The name was derived from the Dutch word kombuis, translated as "kitchen" or "stove", back in the 15th century. This was the name of a cast-iron plate, on which food was prepared on sailing ships. By the way, in the era of Peter I, this room in Russia was called a cook.

You should know that the word "galley" does not have a homonym, since it refers to professional words. But there is a homophone of this word (that is, coinciding in sounding) - "campus". They should not be confused, since the last name is the town of the educational institution, where, in addition to the buildings for classes, there are hostels, libraries, sports complexes and so on.

And the most common to the word "galley" synonyms - it's "kitchen", "cook", "cook", "ship kitchen".

Location of the kitchen

On the ship in the galley you have to follow certain rules. So, the cook does not prepare the first dish during pitching, it will splash out. And when the storm is at sea, the table is covered with a wet tablecloth, so that the plates do not slip to the floor. The difference between the tables on the ship is that along the perimeter they are equipped with bumps, so that small objects do not fall out. On the time of food on the ship agreed in advance, and the table is taken by the whole crew.

The meaning of the word "galley" on the ship does not need to be explained to anyone. Here sailors get not just food, but a reserve of strength for their hard work. In this room is installed equipment that softens the pitching. For example, a safety measure is a stove on a special suspension and its fencing, as protection against falling equipment.

It is important to mention, speaking about the galley, that such a place is not available anywhere. On sailing ships it is located in the bow, on small boats - on the lower decks, and on merchant ships - at the top.

Modern equipment

The work of coca in the old times was not easy: the lack of a refrigerator, the use of coal. From provisions in the presence of only corned beef or meat in live form, located on the deck in cages.

Galley on a modern ship is equipped with various techniques. A mandatory element of the kitchen is a stove. It must meet the following requirements:

  • Compactness. The ship calculates every centimeter of space.
  • Strength. The plate must withstand the maximum loads.
  • Presence of holders. From the unit, dishes must not fall during the rolling period.
  • The possibility of cooking at the same time at least 3 dishes for the crew of the vessel.
  • Thermal insulation of the outer side surface.

Of course, the cooker galley on the trawler is different from the equipment on the large liner. But the general parameters are preserved, in order to provide the crew of seafarers with adequate nutrition.

Heating of water in the galley

It is also important how the galley is equipped. What is the room is necessarily provided with special boilers, of course. They are needed for cooking, processing food, washing dishes, brewing tea.

The requirements for the parameters of such an aggregate are clear:

  • High capacity of the tank (the right amount of boiling water for a certain time).
  • Heating the container from the inside. The outside is cold.
  • Vertical installation and fastening, which creates convenience for galley with small dimensions.
  • The rate of heating of water.
  • Corrosion protection.

The third mandatory component is the refrigerator. Its purpose is to preserve the products during the voyage. The device meets the following criteria:

  • Reliable fixation to avoid bias.
  • Required volume, in accordance with the number of crew members.

The role of the kitchen on the ship

Without a galley and a cocoon in a sea voyage can not do, because everyone, whether a boy or an admiral, needs breakfast, lunch and dinner. And on the sailing boats, and on the liners, and on the submarine submarines, people working on food, and there are always rooms designed for this.

From coca a lot depends on the ship. Well-fed sailors will better perform the goals facing the team. Thanks to the efforts of the ship's cook, the situation on the ship is calm or, conversely, heated, because the ship does not have a cafe where you can eat delicious, or a shop where you can go for groceries.

Throughout history, ships have often become carriers of infectious diseases. WHO has established international sanitary regulations concerning water transport.

The purpose of establishing such rules is to protect the health of workers and passengers, to prevent the transmission of infection from one country to another. These rules stipulate that food products that are taken on board must be safe, and the crew should be trained in sanitation rules and strictly follow them.

Now it is clear what role the galley plays in the life of sailors. What is the place is vital in the difficult and dangerous profession of a sailor, there is no doubt.
