Funny names of settlements. History of origin

For those who often travel or just like to view a map, it's not a secret how entertaining and fun the names of settlements of our country and the world can be. Quite often it happens that more interesting than the village itself is its name - and I want to know what kind of people there live and how they call themselves. Often, one can trace the origin of the names of settlements and find out why and how they gave the village or village such a name - did not it seem ridiculous ?!

Such a tasty name!

Very often funny names of settlements are found in Ukraine. The local population is said to be not at all amused about the amusing names of native villages and villages, only smiles on occasion.

There is, for example, in the Odessa region a wonderful village Borscht. Where did this name come from, and do not need to explain. The famous Ukrainian dish, which gave the settlement its name, was masterly able to cook in a local inn in the 18th century. Travelers who looked in the tavern for lunch and rest, ate delicious borscht and praised. And then not only tried to come back here again, but others were advised that those in this village should stop, because there is no such delicious dish in the vicinity. It is not surprising that the traditions of borscht cooking in the village with this name have survived to this day - every self-respecting hostess here cooks this delicious dish according to its own special recipe.

Tails? We twist? No, we do not bake!

Again, Ukraine - funny names of settlements we find in the Lviv region. Oddly enough, in the village Pechievosty recipes for unusual dishes with tails can not be found, and its residents prefer a potato peeler. However, the legend of how this name has appeared has survived to this day. They say that during the Tatars' attack on these lands all the surrounding people found shelter in a large cave. But at the escape they very much hurried to escape, so much so that they took very little food with them, and it was necessary to survive somehow. So the villagers had to eat the animals they took with them, including baking the tails of bulls and horses. So the name Pechievosty appeared later. Apparently, funny names of settlements often come from serious history. Residents are accustomed to the name of the village. There are many creative people here who are cheerful and talented.

As Tsar Peter once became angry

Of course, funny names of settlements in Russia are also available. A very large percentage of Russians now live in villages and villages with amusing names. And everyone has a special story. Often the village got a funny name, nicknamed the bright personality living in it, and sometimes the name of the village was given to the offended inhabitants of the surrounding villages, seeking thereby to take revenge.

Or here there is in the suburbs of the village Durykino Solnechnogorsk district. According to legend, the name of this settlement was put by Peter the Great himself. One day the great Russian sovereign ordered raw eggs from villagers, who at that time were used to strengthen clay and lime mortars during the construction of walls. And the villagers, having decided that they were sending the eggs to the king in a crude state, took them and welded them. As the sovereign estimated the magnitude of the intellect of the inhabitants, one can guess by the name of the village. Alas, now Durykino has almost emptied, but the old-timers do not forget the legend.

When sucks, not always bad

In the Voronezh region, the station with a very intriguing name "Khrenova" - passengers who decided to travel by train to the regional center, probably pass it. In appearance, by the way, the station is quite consistent with the name, being for the most part a deserted platform with a fairly neglected station. Maybe "Khrenova" and not win the nomination "The Funniest Names of Settlements" at the contest, but it is quite remarkable that the station is located just between two villages with consonant names - Khrenishche and Khrenovoye. The Khrenovoe village, by the way, has a rather rich history. Once there was a large stud farm, and in 1892 the village itself visited AP. Chekhov. And the solution of the name is quite simple - it came from the name of the local river. The river, of course, is also crappy, but not bad at all, it is called so because of thick horseradish on the banks.

To the name have got used

Very often unusual names of villages and villages attract many tourists to such places, because the real traveler is well aware: in order to find something interesting, sometimes you just need to look more closely around. It is enough for someone to record an unusual name, someone is photographed against the tablets, then to show to friends and acquaintances. Here the inhabitants of the village of Bereguifal have long been accustomed to such attention, but they do not at all consider it to be amusing - and there is little that is heard there. Jarly jokers calmly explain that Bereguisfalu is a Hungarian name, which means just one more village near the village of Berehove. By the way, Hungarians there still do not only live, but make up about 60% of the population.

Happiness with raisins

Funny names have not only small settlements. Unusual city names are also found. For example, the city of Happiness in the Lugansk region of Ukraine is unique in its name. According to legend, the founders of the city in the far 18th century were the serfs who had escaped from the landlords. Once through these places Catherine II was passing by, who was glad for the free people living here, and said that they must have happiness here. And so it was.

But the real highlight is not far from Kharkov - the city of Izyum. And even though the city's coat of arms depicts the clusters of grapes, there is still no version confirming the origin of the city's name from raisins. Historians believe that the city is named because of the Izemets River and the Izumi Ford, known from ancient times, on which the settlement was founded.

Village with obscene name

Not only in Russia and near neighbors you can find funny names of settlements, they are, for example, in Western Europe and the United States. And quite often there are those that will be clear to travelers with the most basic level of language skills. For example, it is known all over the world because of its amusing (especially for the English-speaking) name Austrian village Fucking (Fuking). This place is loved by tourists. In fact, of course, in the title there is nothing abusive - the village is named for the founder of Fokko. However, this does not prevent tourists from having fun and taking pictures near the sign with the name of the village. By the way, for quite a short time this tablet was stolen several times already.

The USA also did not bypass the funny names of settlements. There are also such talking names as, for example, Hell (Hell), Idiotville, Climax and others.

You laugh, and we were born here and live

Alas, it often happens that the name of a native village does not please its residents at all. Sometimes they are even ashamed to admit where their small homeland is. After all, funny names of settlements, which are so fascinating to find on a map, do not all seem so funny. Residents of the village of Lokhovo, which is located in the Irkutsk region, a piquant name of the village does not suit. Young people, who, of course, prestige is more important than old-timers, even appealed to the city authorities with a request to change the insulting name, but was refused. After all, despite the analogy that many curious travelers have, the so-called locality named Lokhov, worn by its founder, was named so.

Interesting geography

The cases listed here are only a small part of the funny and unusual names of settlements. There are also villages of Old Worms and Koziavkino, Tsatsa and Mukhoedovo, Such and Good Bees; The villages of Bolotnaya Rogavka and Durakovo, Svinovye and Zhabino, Dudes and Golodrankino; The village of Da-da, the city of Bottom and many others.
