Fracture of the femoral neck requires surgical treatment

Such a serious trauma as a fracture of the femoral neck occurs quite often, with the elderly mostly suffering. With age, bone tissue changes its qualities, its tone decreases and as a result it becomes less durable. In addition, elderly people often have such a disease as osteoporosis. It occurs when calcium enters the body in insufficient quantities or is poorly digested. Often, such a disease develops during the onset of postmenopause, which explains the fact that in women fracture of the femoral neck occurs 3 times more often. As a result of the development of osteoporosis, the bones become so fragile that it is possible to damage them simply by sitting on a chair or hitting the bed.

In the event of injury, a person experiences pain in the groin, which is somewhat worse when trying to move. When a broken leg stops, the injured leg turns slightly outward. If the victim is put and gently to straighten the lower limbs, then the one that suffered, will be shorter. Of course, the size of the foot has not changed, just the muscles contract and pull it closer to the pelvis.

Sometimes it happens that a person has a fracture of the neck of the hip, but he does not experience acute pain and continues to move. In this case, a condition occurs, which is called a "punctured fracture." At the same time, the bones crumble and, as it were, wedge in between themselves. For medical assistance, the victim only turns when the bones are shifted again, and severe pain occurs. In time an unrecognized fracture can lead to very serious complications. In some cases, a person may be confined to bed for life.

It is difficult to treat a fracture of the femoral neck because of the anatomical features of this region. Natural fusion is possible only in childhood and adolescence. Conservative treatment in patients who have crossed the thirty-year boundary, does not give the proper effect and is only used if the operation is contraindicated according to vital indications.

Currently, fracture of the femoral neck with and without offset is mainly treated surgically, using endoprosthetics and osteosynthesis. The doctor in determining the type of operation necessarily takes into account the patient's age, health status, as well as data from clinical and radiological studies.

Osteosynthesis is the bonding of bone fragments using nails, screws and other metal structures. If there are no complications, the recovery period will be approximately 5 months. Such an operation is not done for patients over 60 years of age, because there is a high probability that the bone will not grow together. In some cases, after a successful osteosynthesis, necrosis of the head occurs after a period of time and then another operation is required.

Endoprosthetics are currently considered the most progressive and effective method of treating hip fracture. The duration of such an operation is only one hour, and the patient loses the minimum amount of blood. The modern endoprosthesis makes it possible to walk, relying on an operated leg, within a day. Full recovery takes only a week or a little more.

For patients with a fracture of the neck of the thigh, correct care and rehabilitation play an important role. In some cases, a person has to come for a long time in a recumbent position, and the following problems can arise:

  • Intestinal atony and constipation;
  • Pressure sores;
  • Congestive pneumonia;
  • Psychological and emotional disorders.

But, with some effort, all these manifestations can be reduced to a minimum. Fracture of the neck of the hip has serious consequences. This can be a limitation of mobility of the injured leg and its muscle weakness, pinching of the nerve in the groin. To get rid of them it will take several months to carefully fulfill all the doctor's prescriptions, including doing gymnastics and doing massage.
