Flag of Tunisia: appearance and history

If you want to know the country closer, look at its symbols. For example, the flag of Tunisia. Photos of this pattern are familiar to everyone who traveled or is just going to go to the Middle East. But what is its significance? When did he appear? We'll figure it out!

Modern look

The national flag of Tunisia has a traditional rectangular shape with a classical aspect ratio with a proportion of three to two. The cloth is made in scarlet color. Precisely in the center of the rectangular flag is a large white circle. It shows a crescent moon that skirts a five-pointed star. This emblem is made in the same saturated scarlet shade as the main field of the banner.

The diameter of the white circle is equal to one-third of the length of the canvas, and its middle is located at the intersection of the diagonals. The flag of Tunisia is used in all administrative organizations. The president has his own cloth. Its difference lies in the presence on the top of the flag of the inscription of a golden color - the Arabic text means "for the people." The Presidential Standard is also distinguished by a ribbon attached to the shaft - a white disk with a star and a half moon is depicted on the red field, and gold fringe adorns the edges of the fabric.

History of appearance

The flag of Tunisia appeared in the eighteenth century. Then the red cloth with the image of the crescent was used on ships. When the territory was captured by the Ottoman Empire, a flag was introduced in the form of a tricolor with a blue, red and green stripes. He symbolized the rule of the Turks.

The modern flag is also similar to the Turkish one, although the political situation has changed. The difference lies in the fact that in Tunisia the emblem with a crescent and a star is located in the center. In Turkey, it is depicted closer to the edge, in addition, the colors are used in reverse order - the background is white, and the figure is scarlet. History stores information about another option. At the time of the French protectorate, a special cloth was used here. Then at the shaft was painted the image of the flag of France. This option was in the course of several years. Interestingly, it was adopted by the inhabitants of Tunisia, the French government did not insist on any changes in the symbolism.

Acceptance of the official flag

For a while, the idea of creating an Arab Islamic Republic was in the works. It would unite Tunisia and Libya. For the new state, a flag with horizontal stripes of red, white and black colors and a crescent moon with a star in the center was developed. The project of the association was not supported by citizens, therefore such a cloth was never approved. The modern version of the flag of Tunisia was created in 1999 and has not changed since.
