Eloise James: Bibliography and Photos

Eloise James is the pseudonym of Mary Bligh, a professor of English literature at the University of Fordham, known for her loveful historical novels, which takes place during the Regency era.

Early life and education

Mary was born in 1962 in Minnesota. The girl grew up in a family of writers, so from childhood she was instilled with a love of literature. Her father, Robert Bligh - winner of the American Book Award in the nomination of poetry, the mother - a well-known author of short stories.

After attending a course at Harvard, Bly received a master's degree from Oxford University, and then defended her doctoral dissertation on the Renaissance at Yale University. At the moment, Mary is giving lectures at Fordham University in New York and runs the Creative Writing program. She is also known for her scientific articles published in the collection of the Association of the Modern Language, the most prestigious publication in the field of English literary criticism.

The beginning of the writer's career

Career writer began quite unusual: Mary's husband said he was not going to have a second child until the family paid student loan. Bligh began to look for ways to earn extra money and, taking an example from her parents, wrote her first story called "Strongly Effective Pleasures", which she immediately sent to the newspaper. The writer received a generous fee for this story, which was enough to repay the loan. Mary decided to continue writing and began publishing books under the pseudonym of Eloise James, fearing that her colleagues would not take it very seriously. Her books were translated into 9 languages, became bestsellers in the Netherlands and Spain, 12 of her articles published in The New York Times had unprecedented success. As the writer herself notes, she drew the ideas from her experience as a teacher. A lot of her books appeal to Shakespeare's poetry, in some they cited well-known works of the 16th century. Also, readers note the literary speech of the main characters: Eloise notes that during work she constantly has to read literature in the early British dialect of English, so the replicas of the characters are so similar to the language of that historical time about which the author writes. Many of her novels are published in the trilogy and represent a colorful description of the love relationship between the characters.

Mary Bligh long disappeared under the pseudonym of Eloise James, but at the meeting of the faculty in 2005 she nevertheless told her colleagues about her second job. Later in her article in the New-York Times about the genre of a love story, she revealed her real name to readers. Bligh is quite good at combining the work of the teacher and writing career. Sometimes she hires assistants who are looking for her necessary information about the details of the life of the era, about which Mary writes. This "double life" often attracts the attention of the press, but Mary is trying to stay away from publicity.

A family

The writer's mother died of cancer, so Mary lived with her father, adopted mother, sister and two brothers. Mary met her future husband on a blind date at Yale University. Alessandro Vettori, a teacher at Rutgers University, immediately fell in love with the girl, and soon they were married. Now the family lives in New Jersey and has two children.
