History of foundation

The history of the establishment of this institution is quite simple. In 1838 a group of Quakers and Methodists founded a private school on this site, which in 4 years was officially called the Union Institute Academy. Over the next few years, the building changed its name until 1859.

The main sponsors of the Trinity College were Washington Duke and Juliana S. Carrah - influential methodologists who got rich from the lucrative tobacco industry. These two respected people donated considerable money to the institution for development.

In 1896, Washington Duke donated about $ 100,000 to the college's benefits, but he put a condition that said: "The doors of the institution should be open to both men and women." It was about the equality of the sexes, which encouraged the Duke.

After 28 years, the son of the famous tobacco magnate, James B. Duke, donated more than $ 40 million to the fund of medical, charitable and educational institutions. This list also includes the Trinity College. In turn, the president of the institution insisted that the building be renamed Duke University. In this case, the USA has replenished with one more outstanding educational institution.
