Cocktail highball: what is it, cooking recipes

The cocktail-highball got its name from the dishes in which it is served. Highball in English means simply a "tall glass". Typically, it is a glass with a volume of 270 milliliters, a simple round or square shape. Highball is higher than a glass called an old fashion, but lower than collins. It is clear that from such utensils only longas are drunk - cocktails designed for prolonged savoring. Short- and shot-drinks are usually drunk in one gulp, so the dishes for them are "short". But does this mean that every cocktail, poured into a tall glass, will be called highball? Does this drink have one recipe or several? In this article we will clarify this issue. So, if you pour into a tall glass of sweet liquor, lemon juice and mineral water, then this cocktail will already be called rikki. And if in the number of ingredients gets egg white, then as a result of birth fiz. If you add a lot of lemon juice to the strong alcohol, as well as sugar syrup, then this drink will be called a sling. When we replace the distillate with wine, crush berries, orange and ground ice, we get a cobbler.

Hot highballs

A tall glass with thick walls holds the temperature well. Often in the long ice add. But this does not mean that the cocktail-highball is an exceptionally cool drink. Depending on the season, they are also warming. A classic example of a winter highball is the grog. Classic drink is made on the basis of rum, but it is also allowed to use cognac, brandy, liqueurs. Mix in a glass 50 g cognac, 15 grams of dark rum, two teaspoons of liquor. We pour over a hundred milliliters of hot, but not boiling milk. A classic grog is obtained by mixing 50 grams of rum with a mug of tea. If desired, you can add a circle of lemon or two spoons of honey.

Before chopping ice at home, make sure that the bowl of the blender is not plastic. Also important is the amount of "snow". In frappe, the glass is filled to the top with finely chilled ice. Mixed cocktails that were poured onto this snow crumb did not exceed fifty milliliters in its total volume. Then the drink was stirred with a special spoon-straw. Now they serve not only alcoholic frappe. It is prepared with various juices and syrups. And the leader in popularity was the coffee version. One thing remains unchanged: they serve such drinks in a high straight glass, like a cocktail-highball.

In high glasses it is customary to do fizzy - effervescent, foaming beverages. Stable foam can create soda, lemonade, coca-cola, but also champagne. Consider, for example, how to make a cocktail "Gene-fizz." Fill the shaker to half the ice cubes. We pour in 60 milliliters of gin. We add a spoonful of powdered sugar. Squeeze the juice out of half a lemon. Shake the shaker to make the ingredients come to a friendly balance. We pour content into highball. We add to the edges of the soda. Serve with a straw.
