The first serious opponent was the former IBF champion American Tavoris Cloud, who before the battle with Beterbiev suffered two defeats in a row. The inferiors of Clauda were the heavyweights of the Canadian Adonis Stevenson and the American Bernard Hopkins.

Despite this, Tavoris Cloud was considered an undisputed favorite.
