Bluegrass meadow - a perennial grass

Bluegrass meadow (photo below) is a perennial of the genus Bluegrass of the Cereal family. It is one of the earliest rhizome-loamy cereals. Forms underground creeping shoots, which contributes to the formation of a dense sod. Its leaves are soft and narrow, dark green in color. Inflorescence is a panicle, which is tightly compressed before and after flowering, and during the flowering period becomes spreading.

Bluegrass meadow belongs to cross-pollinated plants. It blooms mainly in late May. Flowering begins at the top of the panicle and lasts 15-17 days. If the aim is to obtain the seeds of this plant, then it should be planted on fertile, moderately moist loamy soils. Seeds of bluegrass meadow give in the first half of July. The plant belongs to moderately drought-resistant and heat-resistant species. It is resistant to spring late frosts, safely tolerates low temperatures even in the absence of constant snow cover.

In the springtime in the steppe zone, bluegrass meadow grows in the second half of March, in the first half of April lawns start to turn green, and after 15 days tillering begins. In the first half of May, the tube enters the tube, from the middle to the end of May - the inflorescence of the inflorescence and flowering. Seeds begin to ripen from the middle of June.

In the year of sowing the aboveground part and the roots of bluegrass meadow develop slowly, even if you plant it in early spring, only a few vegetative shoots will appear by autumn. Single shoots appear already on 13-14 days, massive not earlier than a month after sowing. The tillering occurs three weeks after emergence. Its full development, it reaches only after 3-4 years. By the way, bluegrass multiplies not only by seeds, but also by dividing the bush.

The plant prefers a sunny location and fertile soils. It easily tolerates flooding with meltwater, even prolonged. Under favorable growing conditions, resistance to trampling is noted, which is especially important, since meadow grass is necessarily used in lawn mixes.

A lawn mix with this cereal is actively used for children's and sports grounds, for country and park areas. It is sown not only on sunny areas, but also in shaded places, even under trees. If bluegrass is used in a mowed and well-irrigated lawn, it lives indefinitely. Moreover, according to the density of the grass stand, it yields only to the red fescue and the oatmeal .

In addition to gardening and improvement, bluegrass is actively used in animal husbandry and in the struggle against soil erosion. It is a gentle and nutritious food for many farm animals that is suitable for grazing and hay making. It is used for feeding sheep, cattle and horses, and it is eaten by turkeys and rabbits. In the wild, it is used by moose, and for deer it is generally considered one of the best herbs. Bluegrass seeds are a food for several species of rodents and songbirds. Due to its dense turf and the ability to quickly restore it is an excellent coating in the fight against soil erosion. It is used on steep banks, on the border with water, on the edge of fields mixed with other herbs or with legumes. For the prevention of bluegrass diseases, it should be low-cut before winter, especially in the area where no large snow cover is expected.
