Силихем-терьер: character, the description of breed, features of behavior, leaving and responses of owners

In the famous Krylov fable, where Moska barking at the elephant, the silikem-terrier could become the protagonist, since the distinctive feature of this little dog is that she considers herself very large. At the same time, this beautiful breed, elegant, beautiful, energetic, can become an excellent companion and friend for those who will appreciate it.

History of the origin of the breed

Силихем-терьер has been deduced in 50th years of 19 centuries. He owes his appearance to retired captain John Edwards. Possessing several individuals of dragon-jacks and terriers, Edwards was not completely satisfied with their hunting qualities, so he decided to bring out a short-legged, small but very strong and active white dog.

Fast enough he got what he was looking for, dogs of this type were similar to modern silichems. In the nature of the animals, Edwards wanted to see aggression, courage and malice, so that they could fearlessly engage in a fight with a badger or other rodent, for example. After a thorough physical examination and selection, the silichem-terrier puppies and young specimens were first etched into rats, then to ferrets. Those who did not pass the test were mercilessly discarded.

When creating the breed, the welsh-corgi blood was mixed to improve tracking, fox terrier for hunting passion and fearlessness, dandy dinmont terrier to improve the wool cover - hard and thick, protecting from bad weather and attack of the victim.

As a result, a breed was born, distinguished by ardor and courage in hunting for the rodent, otter and badger. The breed of silichem-terrier, whose kennel John Edwards called Of Sealy, quickly became known and spread throughout the world. In 1911 she was recognized as an English dog breeder. And in 1912 appeared the official standard of this breed.

Description

Like all representatives of its kind, the silichem-terrier has excellent physical data, developed muscles, a strong long neck and powerful bones, which, with proper training, makes it the star of exhibitions.

He has a beautiful dense and, most importantly, non-staining wool, so you can get a pet not only in your house, but in the apartment. The dog must be white, with small marks on the face and ears. In exceptional cases, it may be yellowish. Since wool of silichem-terriers has an internal undercoat, they perfectly tolerate sharp changes and low temperatures.

Their funny features are thick white sideburns and small shiny black eyes with thick brows pulled over them, giving the dog a formidable and imperious look. The nose is black and large. The tail is short, docked, directed vertically upwards.

According to exhibition norms, the growth of an adult should not exceed 31 cm, weight - not more than 9 kg (males), 8.2 kg (bitches). Of course, there are other generally accepted standards of this breed.

Character and temperament

Silikhem-terrier, the character of which is considered by many dog breeders to be formidable and aggressive, is in fact a very loving, cheerful and mischievous dog. She is devoted to her family, loves children and will want to be with you wherever you go. She is friendly to outsiders if they behave in a friendly manner towards her. Be sure to bark to the owner about the guests who came. It can be aggressive towards other pets, but mostly peaceful enough, because it has historically accustomed to work in a pack.

Despite their small size (at the withers such dogs rarely exceed the 30 cm mark) and short paws, like all terriers, they are very active, fast-moving and inquisitive pets. They make wonderful runners, jumpers, and you will be very surprised where in such a small dog so much energy and speed.

They have a lively, intelligent and curious mind, so they are easily amenable to education and training. Especially good is the breed of silichem-terrier in agility - competitions to overcome the obstacle course for dogs.

Can be self-willed, like all terriers, but with competent upbringing and the authority of the owner will become a very obedient pet. Truly noble dogs, who were, by the way, pets of the royal family of England.

Pet Content

All known about the dogs Silikhem Terrier (character, description of the breed) confirms that they can be easily maintained in the apartment. Wool does not shed, so it will not settle on furniture and clothes, and if someone in the family has an allergy or have children, the content of silichem will not be a problem. At the same time it is thick enough, warm, with an inner undercoat to bear the cold, so the content in your house is quite possible. Plus, the animal is practically odorless.

Do not forget that the silikem-terrier is an active hunting dog, it must necessarily release its irrepressible energy, therefore daily long walks are compulsory. This is also necessary for her well-being. In addition to hot summer days, the dog tolerates high temperatures with great difficulty. But in winter you can take a walk longer, to the cold it is well adapted.

Pet care

Despite the absence of molting, which is famous for the breed of silichem-terrier, grooming must be regular and thorough. Daily comb the dog with a rubber brush, massage the withers.

To bathe animals of this breed can not be more often than once a month because of their extremely sensitive skin. Bathing procedures should be carried out only with special dog shampoos. But the ears should be cleaned regularly, 1-2 times a month.

Also weekly, it is important for a dog to brush his teeth and wash his eyes with a decoction of chamomile. These are mandatory procedures.

Trimming dogs

With regularity 1-2 times a week, do trimming - plucking old hair in dogs that can not shed their own. Of course, in the first stages it is better to do this from a professional master, otherwise you can cause an irreparable psychological trauma to the puppy, which you will inexperiably hurt.

In the future, it will be possible to carry out trimming at home, and not at the hairdresser, when the dog gets used to this process and understands that you do not do any harm to it (because with dead-haired dogs the dead hair is separated painlessly). If this is not done, the old wool will collapse and create so-called coils, which will be very difficult and painful to remove.

But the haircut of the breed Silikhem Terrier, the description of which speaks of the hardness of the wool, in no case can not be done, because the animal's hair can change its structure, acquire an unusual softness and fragility. Therefore - only trimming.

Health and disease

Is some silicium terrier suspected of some ailments? Diseases visit him infrequently. In general, the health of this dog is excellent: excellent immunity, endurance to low temperatures, heavy loads, etc. Seldom occurs congenital deafness in puppies, but from this problem all breeds of the dominant white color of wool are not insured. There may be allergic reactions to certain foods, so the diet of silichem should be balanced, it is advisable in this occasion to consult with a veterinarian. To old age, the dog can begin to suffer from eye diseases, so we provide the animal with a thorough care, which is described above.

About nutrition

The health of any dog depends primarily on how it feeds. If you feed your silichem with natural food or a special balanced food, the pet will be strong. Strictly forbidden feeding from the master's table:

  • Sweet leads to tooth loss and diabetes mellitus;
  • Fish leads to the appearance of diarrhea, vomiting and the appearance of parasites;
  • Potato - to diarrhea;
  • Yeast dough can cause a rupture of the intestines and stomach;
  • Dairy products can cause stomach upset;
  • Bones are not digested, there is a risk of kidney stones.

Ideally, of course, feeding silichems is a special food for this breed, it will contain all the necessary proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. And gradually introduce into their diet fresh meat (except pork), cereals, some vegetables, cottage cheese.

It is important to monitor the number of meals and portions, since silichems like to eat a lot and are extremely prone to obesity. Feed the dog no more than 2 times a day without overfeeding in the gaps, with its size a larger amount can become hazardous to health. But the water should always be in the bowl of the dog.

Training

Despite the lively intelligence, ingenuity and activity, the training of the silichem-terrier is a real test for its owner. On the one hand, they understand what is required of them, and are fully capable of doing so; on the other hand, they do not want to act on anyone's orders, even the boss's, and in every way resist training. Therefore, if you want to have an obedient obedient dog, a professional cynologist must take part in the education of silichem. If you feel the strength, perseverance and firmness of character, you may be able to subordinate the dog yourself.

Since this kind of terrier belongs to the hunting breed, it is a great happiness for them to run after some rodents or cats. The option of more serious training - overcoming the obstacle course (agility), here silichem simply does not have equal among the fellow terriers.

Do not forget to praise and encourage obedience and execution of your dog's commands, it is best to use a small delicacy, but verbal praise too will do.

Popularity of the breed

The breed of silichem-terrier, reviews about which are the best, eventually gaining more popularity. And this is not surprising, because they are energetic, funny, cheerful and amazing dogs with a high level of intelligence and extraordinary devotion. At the same time, they are wayward, have a difficult character, so the location of the dog must really be earned. Therefore, terriers will be a huge test for the owner, but also the most faithful beloved and amazing friend.

Therefore, the silichem increasingly appear in the families of celebrities, for example, they were from Alfred Hitchcock, Harry Cooper and many others, and are also favorites among some members of the English royal family.

Today they are popular not only in England, but all over the world. They can be found in the USA, Canada, Australia, Russia, Italy and even in Africa.
