Who are the columnists and what is their work

Who are the columnists? A few people know the answer to this question. However, it should be noted that without them there would be no one without which modern man can rarely do without - the press.

Definition of term

So, the first thing to do is to define who the columnists are. These are the workers of the printed press, who are the authors of their own column (section or rubric). It should be noted that several columnists sometimes work on one heading.

In the distant 1926th year in the United States of America published a book called "Column." This is a very valuable work. After all, it describes in detail who are the columnists, as well as the details of their professional activities and many other nuances concerning this section of journalism. It should be noted some features. Firstly, today several columnists work on one column. It is rare when one journalist leads a section on his own. Besides, he does not need to be listed on the staff. Often these are freelance journalists.

Origin of the word

English dictionaries have noticed that a word like "columnist" came into use around 1915-1920. This is the so-called "Americanism", which quickly became established in the English language.

It is very easy to understand what the word "columnist" means, because its meaning is quite specific: "this is a journalist who regularly collaborates with a newspaper," or "someone who conducts on television or radio a program similar in style and material to the column, or Writes in the printed edition of the column ". Interestingly, this word was borrowed from the Latin language - in its meaning it is "a text published in the form of a column." And with the suffix "ist", which denotes the name of the person, this professionalism has occurred. Strictly speaking, in fairly early examples, it seems to be recognizablely difficult: in English it was written in such a way that it would sound like a "kalemnist" in Russian. But then the spelling has settled, so when borrowing into our dictionary the term passed as a "columnist".

"News"

This edition, which today stands beside the importance with such newspapers as "New York Times", "El Pais" and many others. As in all eminent journals, it has columns, sections and headings. It should be noted that the columnists of Izvestia are very famous and talented journalists. For example, Dmitri Bykov, who was published in virtually all weekly newspapers in Moscow and is a member of the Writers' Union since 1991. His pen belongs to five collections of poems, as well as the novel "Orthography" and "Justification."

Or, for example, Andrei Bilzho, graduated from a medical institute with a specialty in psychiatry. He is a talented cartoonist who has published about seven thousand drawings in his entire life. Andrei Bilzho was awarded the "Golden Gong" and "Golden Ostap". In Izvestia he leads the brainstorm columns.

Work specifics

Speaking about who are the columnists, we should note the specifics of this activity. The column can only be conducted by the person who knows how to understand the topic, which she talks about. And he does not just need to know what is being talked about. He is obliged to know in detail every nuance concerning the topic. There are rare cases when a journalist, a leading column on the topic "Psychology", would write in the section on gardening.

In addition, the column is not a note or a report. Often these are small, very concise journalistic works. Accordingly, the second duty of the columnist - as clearly as possible, is available and, importantly, it is interesting to present the information. The reader, not being a specialist in a particular topic, on which the column is conducted, must understand from the words of the journalist what is being said. This is the main task of the columnist.
