What is the currency of Estonia?

Estonia is located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland from the north. From the west it is washed by the Baltic Sea. Its eastern neighbor is Russia. From the south Estonia borders on another Baltic country, Latvia.

This country has a rich and interesting history. At the beginning of the second millennium AD, this territory was owned by Denmark. After the popular uprising, she sold the land to the German knightly order. Then Estonia was conquered by Sweden. In 1710, Peter the Great annexed it to the possessions of Russia. Here it should be noted that neither Sweden nor Russia suppressed the national, cultural or religious life of Estonia. Of course, there was also no complete freedom in these matters. Estonia became an independent country after the October Revolution and the Civil War in the early twentieth century. But it was not long. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, it became part of the USSR. In 1991-1992, Estonia became independent definitively.

Much could be told about the history of the monetary unit of this interesting country. But we will confine ourselves to recent times. In Soviet times (before 1991), the Estonian currency, naturally, was the same as in the Soviet Union. It was rubles and a penny. With the attainment of independence, a monetary unit appeared in circulation. Now the currency of Estonia is a crown consisting of one hundred sents. At cost, it was tied to the German brand. The currency of Estonia defined its value as one eighth of the brand value. Where did the name of the Estonian currency come from? Everything new is well forgotten old, and the crown was simply returned from the times when between two world wars Estonia was an independent state.

In the prewar Estonian Republic there were consistently two different currencies. First, the Estonian currency was an Estonian mark. It lasted for ten years - from 1918 to 1928. Then the currency in Estonia changed. It was the Estonian crown, which includes a hundred sents.

From January 1, 2011, the currency of Estonia is the euro. The country entered the European Union much earlier - in 2004. The delay in accepting the new currency was due to the fact that Estonia had to demonstrate certain economic indicators for this. By that date, all conditions were fulfilled, and the country became fully integrated into the European Union.

Let's show what the price scale is supported by the currency of Estonia in 2012. If you use a bus in Tallinn, then it will cost you € 1.3 per hour. Buy a loaf of bread can be for one euro. If you want a snack in a local (non-tourist) restaurant or cafe, then potatoes with salmon and vegetables will cost you five euros. The price of a bottle of beer is one euro.

Estonia is an attractive country for both tourists and businessmen. Its moderate climate and picturesque landscapes provide excellent opportunities for recreation. The tax climate in this country is quite favorable for investors. By the way, in addition to conventional species, so-called medical tourism is popular here. This is due to the fact that in this industry prices are lower than in neighboring countries, and the quality is quite high. This primarily refers to medical facilities located in the city of Tartu, and its famous university.

Estonia is a peculiar, interesting and friendly country to tourists. There are good opportunities for recreation and a lot of interesting sights.
