What are trails, and for what they are used in literary works

An integral part of any literary work is the means of expressiveness. They are able to make the text unique and individually authored. In literary criticism such means are called paths. More information about what trails are, you can learn about this article.

Fiction could not exist without different speech figures, which give the works a special style. Any writer, whether a poet or a prose writer, constantly uses the paths that help convey his own thoughts and emotions, which he wants to express in his creation. It is by a large number of tropes that works of art differ from other types of author's texts. So, let's talk in more detail about the very means of speech expressiveness: what it is, what kinds exist, which ones are most often used, what are their functions and features.

We will find out what trails are. Trails are figures of speech that make the text more expressive and lexically diverse. There are many types of these means: metaphor, metonymy, personification, hyperbole, synecdoche, parcellulation, lithoty, epithet, comparison and others. We will discuss these paths in more detail. In the Russian language there are a lot of them, that's why some scientists tried to identify several such means of expressiveness, from which all the others happened. So, after a series of studies it was found that the "main" trails are metaphor and metonymy. However, there is no single classification of the means of speech expressiveness, since scientists could not determine the single path from which all the others were formed.

Let us explain the significance of the above-mentioned tropes.

A metaphor is a hidden comparison, a speech revolution that helps you to compare several objects with each other without the help of the words "how", "the same as", "similar to anything" and so on.

Metonymy is a means of speech expressiveness, which is the replacement of one word by another according to the principle of "contiguity".

Personification is the appropriation of inanimate objects of human qualities.

Hyperbole is an exaggeration of any properties of an object.

Epithets are special trails. In literature, they occupy a very important place, since they characterize the features of the object: size, color. If we are talking about something animate, then this path can clarify the character, appearance.

Parcellulation - one of the syntactic means of expressiveness, allowing you to focus on the right part of the proposal by separating it from the main sentence.

Now you have an idea of what trails are and what they are. This knowledge can be useful to you not only for the analysis of literary works, but also for creating your own author's texts. Remembering the expressive function of the paths, you can easily diversify the vocabulary of your work with whimsical turns that will make it individual and unique.

So, knowing what trails are, you can create your own literary masterpieces, which will turn out to be the most unusual and individual!
