We study the hardware settings of a personal computer. How to reset BIOS

As you already know, the BIOS is the main computer chip. It is embedded in the PC motherboard and is the main hardware / software link between the user and the operating system. The main tasks of the chip are testing devices and transferring control to the operating system. And now you will learn how to reset the BIOS to the default settings, and what it's for.

Why it is important to reset the hardware settings of the I / O chip

Often the computer starts to function with failures only because the bios is not set correctly. Sometimes users forget the password to enter the basic settings of the chip. For all these situations, the only correct solution is to figure out how to reset the BIOS to factory presets. Another name for this procedure is reset to default settings or "zeroing" of Cmos.

Reset BIOS settings. Options

The first way to reset the settings is to call up the standard BIOS utility ( BIOS SETUP) . Next, look at the interface of this utility and look for the "Load default setting" or "Load BIOS Setup Defaults" parameter. If you find something similar, select the found item and press the "Enter" key.

This is one way to reset the BIOS to factory settings. Unfortunately, there are situations when the computer does not load at all, you can see only the "hung" black screen, and sometimes you can not even see it - the computer stops loading.

Such cases can arise as a result of a spontaneous change of the BIOS SETUP settings , for example, when overclocking (increasing the operating frequency of the processor).

Proceeding from this, there is only one thing: to open the system unit and reset the settings of the base microcircuit on the motherboard itself. How to reset BIOS bios? To do this, next to the battery, the one from which the clock, calendar works, and also the factory BIOS settings are saved, there is usually a special switch (jumper). To get to it, you need to do the following:

  • Disconnect all power cables from the PC.
  • Unscrew the side cover, located away from the power supply unit, with a screwdriver.
  • Find on the motherboard a socket with a battery that looks like a big silver coin. Near it there must be a jumper in the stuck position.

Just in case, next to him write the designation "Clear Cmos" (CCMOS, CLRTC) or something similar.

The jumper is closed on a pin of three pins. Pins 1-2 serve for
Circuit in the motherboard. Pins 2-3 allow you to reset the bios to
Primary settings. It is on them that the jumper closes for about 3-5 seconds.

If there are no such pins on the board, but there are hollow solder pads,
Then, to reset the settings, you need to close them with a metal object.

If in the hardware part of the PC there are no means at all to reset the BIOS,
It is enough to remove the battery for a while from the socket, this is done to discharge the capacitors on the motherboard. Then the settings stored in Cmos will be cleared.

Also, the settings should be standardized if you have updated the software
Provision of bios. Modern microcircuits allow performing so
Called flashing, so each modification of the BIOS SETUP utility must be accompanied by a reset procedure.

Another way to reset the cmos (memory chip for storing a profile
Bios) is to hold the Insert key pressed when turning on the computer, together with the F2 or Delete key. This combination allows for some system boards to achieve similar results.

Finally, I would like to mention very rare cases. The fact is that on some PCs, zeroing is possible only within a day after the battery is removed. Therefore, in order not to panic in an emergency, it is better to read the documentation on the computer's system board in advance and find out how to reset the bios in your case.
