Excursion to the history

Together with the founding of St. Petersburg, the construction of the monastery began, later becoming the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, and, accordingly, the people began to settle nearby, so it became possible to reunite the city center with the newly growing region.

In 1712, at the behest of the emperor, they began to clear the way to the monastery from the Admiralty, and the monks began to build a passage from the monastery. After six years from the beginning of construction, the annals of those times show that the road was already laid, although in the process it was necessary to overcome certain difficulties, including swamps. Nevertheless, the heaviest areas near the monastery were passed ahead of schedule. Because of the fact that the road was erected from two sides, a characteristic fissure appeared in the vicinity of the present Uprising Square.

The road after the construction of bridges quickly became popular. In early 1716, under the decree of Peter the Great, a bridge was built "on the Fountain River on Pershpektiva". The police lift bridge was built according to the recollections of eyewitnesses somewhere in 1717-1720, and in the future it served as a city border, on which they collected tribute in Mytny Dvor, next to the Gostiny Dvor.

After April 20, 1738, the town planning council of St. Petersburg decided to name the road "Nevskaya Pershpektiva". And the name "Nevsky Prospekt" was fixed only in 1783.

In the early 20th century on Nevsky Prospekt it was possible to ride a tram.

Today it is the very center of public life in the city.
